I haven't met you and I am no pro, but all the same same I will give you a few basic tips I taught myself. I took up golf shortly before my 58th birthday, so I have certain restraints. As well as that I don't have the best coordination and am far from naturally talented. There are thousands of pros who will be more than  happy to take your money in order they can teach you the "classic" swing, but few who will take into consideration your personal restrictions. That doesn't mean lessons are a waist of time, but it does mean you will have to filter out certain aspects of what you have been taught. Regardless of your age or ability these are a FEW tips that will help.

1) Relax your swing and don't try to hit the ball to hard

2) Watching women's golf on TV will give you a better indication of where you need to be.

3) You have probably been told this a million times, but don't take your eye off of the ball

4) Focus on keeping your height consistent prior the the strike.

These are the 4 things I tell myself before approach, and needless to say there are a million other tips to make you a good golfer, however these 4 tips will help you hit the ball cleanly, even if it doesn't go where you want it to go.

I like the tip about women's golf - not for sexist reasons. It does seem easier to follow the swing form of women. Don't know why.

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

Considering the number of people out there that area actually physically handicapped in some way, and still enjoy the game, I think this "competent" pro was the real loser.

Actually, the "hacker" used to tell us how much he appreciated the Pro's honesty. You know the pro could've taken the guys money for who knows how long if he lied to the guy, and coddled him, all the while knowing he was never going to get much better. The guy I was referring to wanted to be a good player, he wasn't trying to find a way to be happy playing lousy golf.

Been reading the little red book-he told a story about telling a pro, who was hitting a 9 iron on the range, toward a target, to use every iron on the same target. No mention of hands, ball position, arms. Made no sense to me until I started doing the same thing a couple of practice sessions ago. I've got to do what I have to do to get a 7 iron ball to the same target as a 56 degree wedge. Only took 20 or so full swings through 200 balls. (needed the macho feel lol)

Previously just flailed away at 10 or 15 balls per club and went home.  Grooved my swing? maybe? But I don't take full swings from under trees or around the greens.

My Uncle was a country club pro before WWII. He told me that if I wanted to learn the golf swing, I should watch the lady pros! Their swings were more "true to form", and not so idiosyncratic as the guys!
