Maybe, but you don't know that. And… the slope could easily have changed. I'd wager it did.

Possibly. The change in color on the green might reflect how water or sun exposure from a different slope affects the direction of grass growth. It was more change in curve than I'd expect from the apparent / visible change in slope.

Could the apparent jog be sort of a 'rising fastball' visual effect where grain change might influence the ball to 'fall' more slowly than expected and basically track more straight than anticipated so appear to curve?

There's also the possibility that the announcer used 'grain' and 'slope' as interchangeable terms which seems to be occurring more frequently. Which used to bug me, but given that you're saying it's usually describing the same thing (they are concurrent on average), it shouldn't.

Virtually all grain grows downhill.

So if there was a change in slope from the darker patch to the lighter patch such that 'downhill' direction was slightly different on each section could that end up affecting how the grain appears visually? Or are you saying that the grain almost always follows the overall slope of the green as a whole vs. individual sections?

Why would I suggest that the grain follows the overall slope of the green? What would a blade of grass know about something 30 feet away from where it's growing? The slope more than likely changed there, coinciding with the change in "color" to the grass.

Interesting! I'd always heard that grain follows the sun, and will usually lay toward the West, Southwest.

That being said, what the Hell was up with NBC cutting away at 5:00PM eastern to show, what? I don't know what showed up on your air, but here it was an infomercial for some lady's cosmetic skin cream! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

In another thread I saw guys saying this was the tourney that "kicks off" their golf season. HUH?! It's a real indication of where it ranks in the golf hierarchy when it can't supplant a lady's skin cream commercial!

Didn't seem likely. Just clarifying.

So that's potentially helpful information. Apparent color changes due to different grass blade angled can often be an indication of a slope inflection point and at least worth investigating as such (patches of other grass types or drought / disease will also affect color e.g.). Good to know.

The sun moves (you know what I mean). Blades of grass do not.

This is where having a tighter product on 'time' would help keep it from conflicting with more popular programming and avoid coverage split between the network and Golf Channel.

The roots don't move, but grasses can exhibit phototropism. On greens the grass stem just don't usually get long enough for it to be noticeable. Close to the surface, grasses typically grow ~ at right angles to the surface which on closely mown surfaces is likely why the grain tends to follow slope.

Yes, I know the Sun moves. I also know that plants move to follow the Sun! Been demonstrated time and again!

And, yes, it's on Golf Channel. As I explained on another thread, I used to have the basic package on Dish Network and could buy the Golf Channel a la carte. Then, the powers that be decided that was not satisfactory, and that I needed to buy the "Ultra Premium" package in order to even get the Golf Channel! I decided to say F U to the both of them!

Look, the tourney is in Hawaii which is, what, 5 hours behind EST? I certainly wouldn't expect them to carry it on the broadcast network to the finish. If that happened at 4PM in Hawaii, that's 9PM Eastern time. Well into prime time. And don't forget, we have the Golden Globules tonight!

All I'm saying is hang with it until 6PM Eastern time! Cut off an hour early for a skin cream commercial? You have to be kidding me!

They don't on the putting green.

It was 5-8 on Golf Channel, so I don't see why it matters that they cut it off at 5 instead of 6. There was still a lot of golf left to be played.

I know it was planned, but a tighter shorter event might give them the window to get it all in on the same channel before competing events supersede.

I don't know what you guys are talking about - nothing superseded anything ... This was how it was scheduled to air from the beginning.  They did the exact same thing yesterday.

Some plants will turn to follow the sun - that's heliotropism. Grasses can start their initial growth (low stem) by bending away from relative shade toward light that's - phototropism.

Quote

Like all plants, turfgrass exhibits phototropism, which is the orientation of a plant or other organism in response to light. However, when maintained at less than 1/8 inch, turf leaves and stems do not change their orientation in relationship to a light source

I understand it was scheduled that way. But to what purpose - so they could broadcast something more popular to the non-golfing audience after 5pm on the main network, right?

My thought is that if the total event was shorter they could fit the whole thing in on the main network and not do this juggling that creates issues with people who don't have the 'premium package' offering GC while some do. Even the bar I was at couldn't accommodate the switch-over.

No they did not! They ran the network broadcast until 6PM.

Yep.

Also, I didn't watch much yesterday… but…

Well, it was. From 4PM to 6PM on Saturday, and from 4PM to 5PM Sunday, How do I know? My TV was tuned to WKYC, channel 21 on my TV, which is the local NBC affiliate. Plus, I heard the voices of Frank Nobilo and David Feherty, who work for NBC.

In case you missed it, my entire complaint about the NBC network was cutting away from a professional golf telecast early to air a skin cream commercial!

And, in case you're wondering why I'm complaining so vehemently, I will not suffer being misrepresented, nor any attempt to make a fool of me on false pretenses!

And, in case you missed it previously, I DON'T GET THE GOLF CHANNEL!

Oh, yes it did! Just looked at it again. Turns out it was on 3PM to 5PM on NBC. Just look to the right of Sunday and you'll see it. Turns out it came on an hour earlier than yesterday, but I didn't catch it because I was too busy watching the Steeler's game. I thought it would come on the same time today.

    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
