I want to tip trim a graphite shaft to increase stiffness. I will be taking off 1 inch from the tip. This would effectively result in a -6 point change in swing weight. Would I then be correct in using a 10-12 gram tip weight to bring the swing weight back to about where it was?   or  I could cut as proposed and give it a try, but a six point change seems like a lot.

Adding 2 grams of weight to the head area will increase the swingweight by one point. So yes, 12 ounces of tip weight would recapture the six lost swingweight points.

Lol! Soda is in fluid ounces though, not weight ounces. 12 ounces is 3/4 of a pound!

Good catch, B... you are correct, 12 grams.

12 ounces would be a weird TourLock counter-counterweight which hasn't been invented yet.

------

As per Z23 swingwt, years ago I had a Wilson Triple Duty Wedge  (supposed pitch, sand and chip). I couldn't count on it for much except short sand shots or half swings around the green, as it seemed heavy.

One day I put it on a swingweight machine, and it registered G1. So, I took it to a machine shop and had the guy drilled out four holes in the sole to lessen the weight. It came out D8 which made it much more versatile. A WUT History Moment!

I thought I read somewhere that adding more than 5 grams to the head area was inadvisable? That some would not do this? Not trying to talk you out of it but you could experiment with several different weights before committing with the epoxy. I think just handling the club at address and waddling it should give you a good idea of the feel. Maybe you don't need all that weight and if it feels right but ends up D0, does it really matter?

I think it depends. Mathematically it is correct, but as for results, it could be that you really could get by with 6 points less, lets say from a D2 down to C8 or so. But to me, it would mess up your timing. Another approach would be to go with a lighter grip, that combined with a "little" extra weight at the tip might achieve the same purpose.  If you found a big box store with a swing monitor, swing weight scale e.t.c. they might let you experiment a little. I remember a short while back when Dick's and Golf Galaxy got rid of all their PGA Pro's, that some of the replacements, were more than willing to give you their time. I even worked "with" a guy, hands on when I was making some adjustments to a TM R-7 Limited. We cut the shaft, put on new grip, tried various combos of movable weights (this was before the SLDR).  My best option of course, would be to take the driver to an independent fitter, try out various "new" shafts and come up with something that works. In all likelihood however, he would end up selling me a whole new driver.

Speaking of which, I was told by a Golfsmith employee that Dicks purchased them and are planning on changing the name to Galaxy. I think GolfTec is also part of the deal? I wonder how much it will affect their service and prices?

This will probably affect the kick point a bit as well?

Are you also using a launch monitor to evaluate the results?

not a big fan of GolfTec. but Dick's store is a lot closer than Galaxy. GolfSmith is not too far away, but would have about 30 mile drive to Mission Valley, San Diego. Another store close by is Golf Mart, but again, not my favorite place.

Kick point will be affected a little. Launch monitor is good idea, but not critical as long as I get a decent "feel" from swing scale results. Mostly, this is just tinkering.

It appears GolfTec was a partner or a tenant at some Golfsmith site. In the St. L area, the Manchester Road site was inside a Golfsmith (now GG). The Clayton and Des Peres operations, however, are free-standing GolfTec shops.

I'm wondering how the franchise custom clubfitting operations will fit into all this.

    • Jesus, when he keeps saying scissoring moment, ugh that is a horrible sounding phrase. Just makes me cringe. It doesn't help my mind went to Mr. Garrison from South Park. 🤣 If you know you know.  I think for the most part, golf shaft companies have gotten this figured out. They ask questions like, what tempo do you swing at. The whole scissor terminology sounds like they want to stand out a bit.  Yea, golfers load the golf shaft differently, and different bend profiles can help out. I do think swing speed matters as well. You probably want a golf shaft with lower torque if you swing faster.
    • Played 9 holes, shot a 39.  Kind of got around. Everything between the trees, so in play. Short game was rusty. Got to get back on that. Greens were stupidly slow because they got a lot of rain yesterday and probably couldn't cut them down. Usually in the summer they are firm and pretty fast for how sloped they are. Got to work on face to path a bit.
