Our regulars number about 12-16 on the weekends and we like team games so that even if you had a bad day you might contribute on one hole or get carried by your team. Sometimes we add a low net just for something different instead of skins. We are always on the lookout for different scoring/games to play. We post scores so scrambles, shambles and other "hit and giggles" don't really appeal to us.

We have tried the usual stuff such as.....

  • Count two better but 3 (or more) on the par threes. Or par fives. Or highest handicap holes.  Or some other random selection of holes.
  • 1-2-3-4 (bear with me on this one) On the first hole you count one BB for the team. If it is a net red number then on two you count two. If another red number then hole three you count 3 balls. If it is par then you stay at two. If you score over par your team goes back to counting one ball and you start again. Trust me it can be nerve racking if your are counting 4 on a par three over water and you are the last guy to hit. Or you can make a big move if you can sneak out a net birdie or three. We score it on a number under par basis.
  • Stableford and its variations
  • Rotating teams of two man BB
  • Sometimes we do Sunday Punishment. If you are high net then you cover the bar and lunch tab. If we have ten guys or more we split it.

Anyone have some others we can try?

1-2-3-4 is a cool idea.

If you often do skins, how about extra skins on top of the normal win the hole skins, however you choose to define that that day?  You could do typical league day things like have some long drive holes or closest to the pin holes.  Or you could do something new, like fewest putts per team, either by hole – that would let you do a 1-2-3-4 version with that too – or maybe total by side?  Could do fairways hit too.

Played this one for the first time last year - it was a lot of fun. Even the less skilled players have a great chance at winning - definitely worth trying if you haven't

If it's pairs then I really like South African Stableford, you multiply your two stableford scores together. So for example someone gets a three pointer and the other partner gets 1 point then your hole score is three, if they both get 2 points its a hole score of 4. It can be cruel if someone gets a birdie on a shot hole and their partner gets a 0. It can work in fours doing best two or best three scores multiplied or even best and worst scores multiplied but pairs works best.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
