I talk a lot about clubs in here, but this is different, so in my driver, 4-wood and hybrids I play Extra Stiff shafts (Matrix Black Tie in D, 4w, and 3h, UST Mayima Recoil in my 4, 5, and 6h). I play Stiff UST Mayima Recoil in my irons and wedges. Does anyone else do this play a stiffer flex in the long clubs, and a softer flex in their shorter clubs? Or am I just an outlier?

My driver is an X while my irons are just S.

I see no problem with that.

It's not that unusual.  Some guys go after it a little harder with their longer clubs, so I've seen players use a stiffer flex in their driver and fairway woods.  These clubs aren't typically used to hit the ball a specific distance...we try to hit them as far as we can.  The stiffer flex in the hybrids isn't as common, but not necessarily wrong. With clubs that are used to hit the ball a certain distance, most guys swing more within themselves so their shaft may not be as stiff.

Whether you're nuts or not is a separate issue   :-P

I have 2 stiff shafted clubs, xstiff irons and driver. I didn't plan on keeping the xs driver shaft but it feels so good. I don't know that it matters that much as long as you like the feel and get an ideal launch.

I heard about this from a former area golf pro who now works as a fitter at a local golf shop. He plays S shaft in his Driver, 3W and 3i, and R-flex in all else. He had a tempo swing with lots of lag, and he simply flexed the longer clubs more than the shorter clubs. He told me about this when he still had his head pro job.

Just a couple of months ago, I saw him fit an athletic 20-something for clubs. He put the guy in a 70-gram S flex driver shaft, but put him in an R300 shaft for the irons. The reason: the guy was a lot more aggressive on his driver swing than his irons swing.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Not all that uncommon, I play with buddies who are gaming x-flex stuff in their longer clubs and stiff or tipped stiff irons. When I went to Oceanside the Titleist guys set me up with S+ C-tapers in the irons but X-flex Aldila Rogue shafts in the driver and 3-wood.

Yes

Custom fit RBZ irons. Taylormade RBZ driver. Some crappy old high-bounce Macgregor wedge and an even older Mizuno 5 wood. Haven't settled on a ball yet - still looking. Decades of football, weightlifting and boxing came together to create the world's worst golfer. I'm slowly correcting that now.

I recently fit an S shaft to my driver and am hitting it better than I ever have. Out of curiosity, I tried the R shaft back in and immediately became sloppy and unmanageable again.

FWIW my irons are R flex.
