Hi everyone, I am struggling with my grip.  One of my biggest problems in golf is I have a tendency to rotate the club face open on the downswing, and I think it may be because of my grip.

This first picture is what has generally felt "normal" to me, or what I think of as neutral.

Now, when I swing with only my right hand on the club, the face always stays square, and never rotates open on the downswing.  So, when I go to the top of my backswing and stop with only my right hand on the club, I'm fairly certain I'm in a proper position, then I put my left hand on without moving my right, and I end up with the following grip.

This grip feels super weird and overly strong to me, but it really helps me not rotate the club face open on the downswing (or the backswing).

Does this look better?  Worse?  What's correct?  Do some people need different grips depending on their anatomy?  Am I doing something else wrong I haven't thought of?

By the way, I'm not sure if these will look very different, but they feel vastly different to me.

Thanks for the help,

Dave

First, I'll refer you to the experts, via this thread:

Second, its a little hard to tell, but it looks to me like your left hand grip is more in the palm of your hand than @mvmac recommends in that video.

The second pic might be a bit too much on the strong side (left hand), I'd recommend something in between the two pics you posted. Right hand looks good.

I prefer someone erring on the strong side than the weak side.

Regarding the second pic, I wouldn't worry about trying to get the inside part of your left elbow facing directly at the camera, it can "relax" and follow the orientation of the left forearm.

What he said ^^^. In the first pic it looks like the V of your left hand is pointing at your chin, a little weak. The second pic I can't even see that V. Too strong. Somewhere between should be your happy medium. And yes, a little strong is better than a little weak.

    • Comment:  Huh, I practiced regularly until 1/31, got busy in Feb-Mar (as I knew I would), and got reinspired today.  I have done some intermittent practice in the past two months, but let's get back on the daily practice wagon. Day 1, April 9 2026.  I worked on some pelvis turn limiting drills, doing one for several iterations before context switching to hit a few balls slowly (trying to retain that feeling), and repeating.
    • I’m thinking maybe Jason Day read my post. He’s sitting a -3 two off Rory and Burns.
    • Is it only the weekend broadcasts that have a low commercial count?  I feel like it has been a long while since I last watched a Thursday of the Masters, so maybe my recollection is off.  I feel today has a lot more than four minutes per hour of commercials, and far fewer of the fun stories they tell during the Sunday broadcast.
