I think some people just like to spend large amounts of $$$ for something. $1000 for a shaft??? WOW!

My uncle used to own a jewelry business and happen to have a Rolex watch that he could not seem to sell... He put the watch in the front window and lower the price to his cost(extremely low for that watch... $900 this was in the 1980's). Still the Rolex would NOT sell... So my uncle then raised the price by $100 every day until it DID sell... for $3100 to a happy customer.

Strange huh?

you're right.... putters have gone up in price, while most other things have stayed the same or dropped... especially considering inflation. I don't buy new putters every few years like some people, but 14 years ago I bought a top of the line and it was about $80.00... you can't find them for that these days.

Your $80 putter would sell for $20 today if purchased new. Like all technology, yesterday's top of the line is today's low end. The 2-Ball was $200 when it was released 4 years ago, today the same 2-Ball is selling for $99 dollars. This is no different than cars, computers, drivers, irons etc.

If want the latest technology you have to be willing to pay for it. If you don't want to pay for it, wait until it is outdated technology and get it on clearance.

True but the point was more at looking at top of the line then versus top of the line now as a reference point for pricing...and I don't think that golf technology is keeping pace with computer technology although the manufacturers want you to believe that. Yesterday's clearance is more a sign of marketing and business practice than anything.

Don't you know that people want to pay for stuff because they think it is better because of the price?

Speaking about how prices have declined....check out the pricing of Ping putters. A Karsten series (think Ping Anser and Anser2) selling for $89? Isn't that crazy?

Out of curiousity....How many out here are still putting with Pings?

One of my friends uses an Anser that he bought years ago used for $21.00. The funny thing is that he is in the golf biz for the last 20 years (from an Assistant to Director of Golf) so he could have the latest and greatest if he wanted.

What has really changed with Putter technology? I guess there is some new insert materials or the alignment aid (like the two ball) but on the Karsten anser putter, I am hard pressed with new tech that changes the way the club performs. If anything the technology should have made it cheaper to produce said putter more then improve how it performs.

I can't subscribe to putter pricing driven solely on material costs. How can a Scotty Cam sell for $300+ when a Ping Karsten sell for $89?

I think irons and putters are going up in price, drivers, hybrids and wedges are going down.

I'm not sure what happened, but a few years ago $700 was a top of the line forged 3-PW set. Now it's $900-$1000, unless you want Miura, TourStage, Epon etc. then add $500 or more to that!

Drivers were $400, now stock drivers seem to be $300.

I put prices are increasing. This is the first time I have had to buy a club, let alone a new bag of them. I am in the process of re-stocking my bag. Already have my new Scotty Cameron, $269 on sale, I know I know what a bargain right. But to re-stock my bag now with the clubs I will be getting hopefully within the next month is going to cost me about $1800.

What a great game though, Right.

Everything is going up, not just golf clubs.
But the technology has not changed that much, except for all the gimicky things (Inverted Cone technology, Multi material etc.). You are better off if you are going to get a driver to get a FT-3 rather than FT-5 and save $300.

Wow... what irons/woods are you buying? I have a set of forged Tommy Armour irons I picked up from a rep for $125. They have rifle flighted shafts and feel as good as just about anything else I've ever hit. In addition to those, I've got an older Taylor Made 460 Burner that I picked up at Sams Club for $60, and a WAYYY old, taylor made (copper color even) 3-wood I bought for $30 from a buddy at work. Even after a ten year break from golf, I outdrive, and hit my irons longer than 99% of the people at our country club. Every pro (4) and low handicapper buddy who's hit my irons, loves them. I think I could 'restock' your bag with an awesome set for <$300 easily.

I agree whole-heartedly. Like I mentioned in a previous post. My driver is a four-year old model, but I hit it farther, straighter and more consistantly than most people I play who have to own the newest sticks.

For that matter: I hit the original big bertha driver (yep, still have it); that I used to play in junior high and high school (13 years ago or so). I hit it almost as well as the Taylor made! The only thing I've "upgraded" to new technology is my putter and wedges. I LOVE my Odyssey Black series i putter, and Nike SV Tour wedges.

You guys living in the US should be grateful, here in Sweden everything is much much more expensive. But I've seen over the last 1-2 years the price on Drivers has decreased, not sure about the irons though.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
