Hi everyone,

New member here. I am currently an 18 handicap and looking at getting the Taylormade psi irons. I realize the M2's and other game improvement irons might be more suited for my game but I really enjoyed the feel of the psi's...  although I only hit about 20 shots with them. I am normally a pretty consistent iron player and consider it my main strength. They are also on for a great price at my local store right now, further convincing me to buy them. Do you think this would be a good idea, or am I being stupid and should settle for game improvement irons?

Thanks!

Don't buy something you don't want.  The rationalizations will fade quicker than a 40 year old 1 iron.

I think they are good and I like them.

I hear a lot of crap about taylormade clubs and I am not sure it is warranted.

Nice screen name. I don't believe that clubs matter that much. Especially for an 18 handicap. Unless you are rich, I wouldn't drop a grand on something you could get for 150 dollars that is just as good. Go to a golf store and do a double blind test with 3 or 4 sets of irons from the last 10 years. See if there is a difference.

Welcome to the site @RickRude.

No, I don't think it's stupid play a club you like.

There are tons of debates over GI vs Players clubs, but I tend to agree with @Piz - assuming you're fiscally responsible. If you settle for something less, you may regret it.

Maybe take some more swings with the set, and especially the long irons, just to make sure you like them.

I wouldn't mind having a modern set of irons designed for better players. I like the challenge they present and often practice with an old set of blade style clubs - even though I own a very nice set of GI irons.

Nice screen name to you too. I tried a few sets and there a huge difference in feel between the irons today and the ones I am currently playing with (2004 taylormade racs which are GI irons from then). Maybe irons from 5 or so years ago are similar, but ones that are 13 years old are clearly inferior.

Sadly, this is the truth.

Happily, shiny new things can easily be justified. If you are not married and will take no crap from a significant other, have the money, I'd say buy them...but...get fitted by a real fitter. I'm into my third year use of a set of KZG clubs, put together by a local well respected guy.

I haven't been trolling for new shiny things since buying them.

Take your time and hit a bunch of different clubs. If you come back to the Psi, then it will be an educated purchase.

    • Feel like you are left side dominant. Keep the back of your glove running through impact. Keeps leading edge down without digging. You will pick them clean with some zip if the grass is nice and generally acceptable results off anything less than ideal. Works with both hingy or dead hand pitches and chips.
    • Day 52 (30 Apr 26) - Had planned a solo round, got invited to be part of trio that included a fmr mini tour pro.  Was fun playing back a set of tees and having to stay in my game plan. Both were very engaging and encouraging in the round.  A good day in working through and making smarter shot choices.
    • Day 576 - 2026-04-30 Put my playlist on and slowed down a little as things were meh. Mostly got to an exaggerated P6 and hit from there.
    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
