Returning to the game after a long, long layoff from a lower back injury in a car accident and have been wondering about a new set of irons.  I still have my original King Cobra Left Handed irons from 1995 with Regular flex steel shafts.

Because I have been away from game so long (last serious rounds were 2002) and knew I needed somebody to take a look at my swing and had a lesson yesterday.  Shockingly the pro is also left handed, and had an old Ping G10 Orange seven iron that he was using to illustrate things during the lesson.

After the lesson, I hit a few balls with his G10 and could not believe the difference!  The resulting shots were night and day from hitting my old Cobra.  If I understand the Ping chart the orange is 2 degrees flat.  The Ping was also an inch taller than my Cobra.

Naturally this has me thinking about a new set of irons, but have been away for so long not sure where to start.  As I understand it the G10 is no longer made, but would like something like that.....  Is it considered a game improvement iron?

Have lot of questions, hoping to get some input.

Every golf manufacturer has game improvement irons. Ping has continued their Ping G series. The best advice would to find a demo day at a golf store or golf course near you and try out some new clubs.

Thanks for the reply!  That is good advice, but in the past in Dallas and Austin at demo days saw very limited selection for lefties.  Granted that was 2001 and things may have changed.  Would be great to show up at a demo day and actually see a large selection of left handed clubs to try.

Also nearest city likely to have golf stores is Syracuse which is still 90 miles from me.

That's why I was hoping to get some input on other lines of clubs similar to the G10 so I can do some research.

It is tough to say because the G10 came out 10 years ago. Most golf club companies come out with irons every 2 years. So, there should be 5 new G series golf clubs from Ping since then. If you like Ping G10 then probably any of the G-series irons would work for you.

Don't know if I like them any better than anything else out right now.....  Just hit that 7 iron tons better than my own club, and haven't hit any other new clubs.

After being out of the game so long, trying to get a better idea of what is out "there" right now.  Everything is so different then 2002 pre back injury.  Don't remember the categories club makers want to put clubs in back then.  Player clubs, game improvement clubs etc.

Trying to contain my enthusiasm for what is new and buying a new set of clubs, or working with what I have while trying to redevelop my old swing and game.

Don't know how similar they are to g10s but I hit the g30s a couple of years ago when they came out and absolutely loved them.

Id look around for sure, but make sure you at least try latest G model as well.

The G10 was ranked as a SGI (super game improvement) club.

The new Ping iron closest to this is the Ping GMax.

The G30 and more recent Ping G would also be worth trying out.

Ya, go for the new G400 irons. They'll last forever, and my ****, they are the sexiest game improvement clubs I have ever seen.

And skip the 3 Iron, and get a hybrid in there instead. And if you have room and can find one, get a Callaway ApexUT Driving iron, or even the new Ping crossover. (My ApexUT may not always be in my bag, but it's always in my heart.) :p

Those are really sweet looking.  Not sure the wife will let me spend that kind of money on a new set of irons.

Got to use that Ping G10 again yesterday on the range.  Man can I hit it better than my 7 iron....

Decisions, decisions.

@scotth why not just pick up a used set of G10's then?  Or G15, G20, etc.  They are all pretty much the same (just pay attention to the shaft on the one you like)

I have been looking on eBay.  That whole left handed thing really is getting in the way. But you never know.

Been also thinking of going the component club route and building them myself.

Shouldn't be a problem finding a used lefty set, there are several between the G10 and G25 models listed on eBay, at decent prices.  There are other places to look as well (2nd Swing, or other outfits like that)

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
