Can anyone not be pulling for Saunders here?

How cool would that be, to get his first PGA tour win at the same tournament where Arnie got his? :-)

16 and 18 should be changed to Par-4s. Watching guys hit pitching wedges into these "par-5s" is a little absurd.

It wouldn't change anything other than the amount under par. It still is total amount of strokes and whoever has the least wins.

Nice to see Vegas defend. That is a fairly rare feat.

The course is over 7200 yards, I guess short by PGA standards, but not every par 5 can be 600-700 yards, which would be needed to stave off the extreme length of drives these days, did I hear correctly that DJ poked one out to 390ish?

Frankly, what percentage of par 5s are reachable by several on tour today, probably north of 80%.

Yeah several guys hit some 380 plus drives which puts it in the rough before the water. The actually par number doesn't mean much. They could make it a par 70 and still 267 won the tournament.

Agree. Still it just doesn't sound right.

I saw it live.  It was a funny exchange, but shady?  How?

The RO was called in and ruled, appropriately from what I saw.  Sometimes the rules help...

I'm waiting for the "Hoffman was dishonorable… he should have played the ball where it was originally" posts.

(This is similar, though perhaps slightly different, than the European Tour thing with the bunker liner that happened recently. In that case some felt that the guy dug pretty far down to reach the liner… i.e. he may not have "fairly" taken his stance. Hoffman does not appear to have dug very deep at all here.)

Yeah I know...just seems like it's called a 'hazard' for a reason. He chunked it anyway. Dottie Pepper said some call it Karma, and Chappell's comments hinted at the dubious nature of the call...I thought it was funny to hear Chappell say that.

I don't think there was anything dubious about the ruling, but that's conditional on whether he dug extra to try to get to the cement or bunker liner.

If he had a great lie and found the same liner, it's his option not to take relief. Relief is granted, not required.

His stance was at the very top of the bunker.  Didn't seem to me that he'd dig in much at all.  The sand was just very shallow at that point.  The RO tested the depth of the sand with a tee as he examined it.

All true. He certainly didn't dig like what happened at the Euro tour IIRC. Sand is too hard and clay like for me to ever find the bottom where I play. Anyway...wanted Saunders to win. Decent tournament though.

It would have no difference to how he played the shot, and he would not have asked for relief if he had a good lie in the bunker. It was clearly within the rules, but the rules on this occasion are too generous. If you hit it in a bunker, tough luck should be the approach in my opinion.

That makes no sense.

You cannot support a system of rules where whether you get relief depends on the opinion of whether something is fair, lucky, generous, etc.

The rules just are. Sometimes they're favorable. Sometimes they are the opposite.
