This is a "local interest" type of post. But, I'm wondering if other areas have the same type of event. This is run by the local newspaper, the Youngstown Vindicator in Youngstown, Ohio. It's a 54 hole tournament with a cut after 36 holes.

There are various brackets for play with Men's Open, and Men's in various handicap ranges. There are two Senior divisions (60 to 69) of varying handicaps. Super Seniors (70+), and a Women's bracket. GHIN or league certified HI's are required but only for pairing. It's straight scoring.

The week starts with a scramble tournament. Your team must have won one of 20 "official" scramble tourneys leading into the competition. Thursday brings the long drive contest at a local country club. This year's winner hit 329 yards.

Friday brings the real deal. Everyone plays their first 18 at Mill Creek Park Golf Course, 36 holes of Donald Ross designed golf. I drove down there to check it out, and I've never seen the place so crowded! Thank God there's a facility like this, because there were over 300 entries this year! For Saturday the mob is split up among 4 private country clubs in the area.

Then, after the 36 hole cut, the finalists play The Lake Club. What a beautiful place! It's not all that long, but you'd better be able to talk to your ball and make it follow directions! And it's very hilly. And the greens are like glass!

So, I'm thinking of getting in on this next year. How many other place have something like this?

Something like what?

It's a 54-hole tournament, in the end, with a lot of participants. Right?

We have an "all-city" tournament which was this past weekend.  18 holes at the Arnold Palmer designed Kings Walk and 18 holes at the Country Club.  There are the same types of flights by handicap, and a senior flight too.  For the championship flight they cut after 18 holes in which those players' scores reset and they are in the Presidents flight.  Same type of thing, just less holes and less people.

The only thing weird about it is starting an individual tournament with a team scramble.  Or are they two different tournaments during the week, the results of one having nothing to do with the other?

If that's the case, nothing unusual at all.

No, two different tourneys. As I stated your team has to win one of 20 scramble "qualifiers" in order to be in the GGOV scramble tourney. The long drive contest is an individual event only for those who wish to compete. It's not mandatory.

I guess it's not all that unique, but it's only been in existence for 8 years here since the newspaper got it going. One of the sports editors is the driving force behind it.  Had over 300 participants this year. I thought it was kind of neat.

Yeah - it's kind of cool to have that many different events/brackets, so everybody has something to enjoy.  I could see it ending up with a "festival" atmosphere, just centered around golf.

I don't know of anything like that around here or in Philly (although I'll admit I haven't really looked).

I would think that it is unique in that it is a tournament open to anyone who wants to enter.  I wouldn't think that these are all that common.

I've played in dozens.  Local city and county tournaments abound, along with those like that in the OP, where a major local or regional sponsor puts one on, generally benefiting a local charity.

Granted, there are fewer that are 54 holes, but they're still all over.  A lot also have any number of skills challenge segments along the way too.  Long drive, putting, chipping, even water skipping onto a green.  They all tend to be fun.

I have never noticed them in SW Pa. Maybe I just never looked hard enough.

True, but look at where you live. You're in Florida! We're in Ohio where we have an actual Winter! You can play year round. This tourney has to find 5 private clubs to host the last two days of this event! I'd say this involves some effort and involvement on the part of the newspaper.

Mind you, there are local scramble tournaments galore all Summer! But, they aren't like this. It's fun yes, but somehow it seems to be serious business. These folks are playing for something!

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
