I'm a woman and I want to learn how to play golf.

Is golf a hard game to learn? I run, lift weights, dance, swim, play basketball and so much more, but I never played golf. I'm very interested  in learning and want to get some advice and tips.

Golf is difficult but those who like it enjoy the challenge.

When spring-time comes around, perhaps look into a "Get Golf Ready" program taught by a nearby PGA professional?

Thanks for replying. I enjoy a challenge and that sounds like a great idea. I'm going to take your advice and search for a local program.

It is not a hard sport. I am a 3 sport athlete (boxing, sand volleyball, Golf) and have played college football and college wrestling in my early 20s. Of any sport I ever played golf is by far the easiest. With practice, confidence, and athletic talent you can start really enjoying the game in about 2 months. You first couple round will SUCK, but when you start learning the game, learning your clubs, and gaining confidence it will be the most fun sport you will ever play. I would suggest to you to play for 2-3 months, then get some lessons to help your game after that. and for the record I am not sure what being a woman has to do with the topic of being a new person playing golf.

Welcome to the site, and it is a predominantly male sport that is quickly becoming more gender neutral.

My daughter plays for her high school "coed" boys team. On the course, I end up being partnered with many ladies in the mornings.

Well hello @nina_busty_carter! So cool for you to come! I wish I could echo @wakefield724 opinion regarding golf being easy. I too did multiple sports, some to a rather high level, MMA, Football, Soccer, Racquetball. Now, I can say golf may have been easy to 'play' but it was and remains to be the hardest I've ever experienced to become 'good' at. By good I mean breaking 80, maybe 85 too. However, like @iacas said it's a game so many of us really enjoy as it is most certainly challenging. Look around this site, there is so much here I think you'll enjoy it.

I think golf is as hard as many other sports. How long would it take you to learn tennis and play reasonably well? Depends how much time you put into it. With some commitment, maybe a couple of years. Same with golf.

As I tell my friends, playing golf for fun with a beer in the hand is easy. Learning to play well is a different story. I took up golf at age 52 and I made a promise to myself I would become a good golfer. I knew it would take a few years and I accepted it. After about four years I was shooting high 80's to low 90's. Not bad. But I did put a lot of effort into it.

By the way, learning to play golf is the best present I have given myself in my life.

This is pretty true. The only difference between golf and other sports like tennis is you compare yourself to the pros and a fixed par. I have played tennis and other sports and always managed to keep up with most people, even though I never thought of myself as a good tennis player or anything. So, to play reasonably well, I felt like if I could keep up with at least half the people I knew, I considered myself playing at a reasonable level. Same with any other sport that involved competing with someone.

The issue with golf is you compete with par, which in turn allows you to "compare" yourself to the pros in some indirect manner. If you shoot 25 over and only look at how you compared to your buddies you'd likely think to yourself "I play at a reasonable level". Alas, not really. . .

I just started 2 months ago (F45), and love the game. It certainly is a very difficult venture, and requires a lot of dedication, time and money. But hopefully it'll be worth it. As mentioned above, just be patient - you likely will take a year or twp to reach "decent" stage. Two pieces of advice: get lessons, and be careful not to overtrain on the driving range. I am currently afflicted by trigger finger on my left hand, sore wrists on both hands, and a mild case of tennis elbow on my right. Most women do not have strong forearms, so the repeated banging into mats are really tough.

Every person that I have golfed with has said that it is the hardest sport to play at a decent level.  This includes a former All state College QB.

Troll or no, the name reminded me of my grandmother, who was quite busty and won the ladies club championship several times, even though she started golf late in life and didn't really have much of a golf swing.  But she had her routine and did the same thing every time and hit the ball well.  Used to kick my grandfather's butt and that was always a popular topic around their house. 

My grandfather had Hogan's Five Lessons book and she would always lift her arms over her ample bosom to tie her elbows nice and tight like Hogan's picture.  If was mildly embarrassing for me at the time but she could play.  Was a good bowler too.
