Hi all,

I have noticed that tiny rust spots have developed on the metal shafts of my irons and putter. I am afraid that trying to buff/polish this off will "open up" the rust and really cause it to take hold. Or that I would damage the shiny surface of the shafts. Any advice? Should metal shafts be lightly oiled?

P.S. I live on the coast, where rust can be a problem on older vehicles, for example.

Im no proffesional but from what i understand, light surface rust isnt too bad and can often be cleaned off. Its pitting of the shaft that you need to look out for. If you start getting pitting appearing then you would need to replace the shafts

Yes lightly remove the rust. You can lightly oil from time to time; or use a silicone gun/reel cloth; or wax from time to time. All to protect against the humidity  (?) that is causing the rust.I did this for a long time to keep some really old clubs nice.  Good luck, -Marv

From 20 years ago: Someone recommended rubbing the shaft with a couple layers of aluminum foil. Supposedly the foil would knock off the rust particles without abrading the shaft too much.

When I lived in Florida I also got spots of rust on iron shafts. I bought some anti corrosive spray at a Big Box Store (several brands available) and used it with 4/0 steel wool to remove rust spots. Then I applied a little anti corrosive with a soft cloth about every 3 months. They look just fine now.

I live on the south shore of Long Island, NY where my older clubs are subjected to salt air off the bay and I have never had a rust problem. I have a set of old Ping Eye2s with steel shafts and they look like new. I will say that I clean them after each round using a waxed base cleaner, like for cars, (don't remember the name right now), so that probably helps. I would go to a Pro shop and see what they say, you don't want to do more harm than good. Good luck, I hope you find the answer.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
