Well I played my first 18, having only played 9 hole mostly before, it's a par 64 and I finished on 95 shots. Disappointed due too some over the tops and some shanks, but it'll come with experience.

but th advice I need comes here, I was playing 4 ball, 3 of us there for fun, and one serious guy. So a few questions,

First - 3 of us don't have a handicap, 4th guy had a handicap 4/5 years ago, depending on which one of us he talked too, he played of 12/13/14. So he counts on a point system, can he count points if the rest of us don't?

2nd - he had 17 clubs in his bag, should we of said something?

3rd - he didn't play the last hole because 'he had hit enough points'. Wtf?

4th - if a ball went out of bounds he dropped it nearest it went out rather than replay the shot, is this right?

5th and final - when he was counting his points he said he's playing around 18 handicap and counted too it. This is wrong right?

sorry about all the questions guys I hope you can help?

I have no idea what that guy was playing. How you handle his rules violations, too many clubs, illegal drop, I guess depends on the type of round your playing. We had a nice day in New England today, almost 40. I went out with friends and one hit it OB, but we were all pretty sure on the T he was fine. So we treated the white stake as red for pace of play reasons. But we are not posting rounds yet and it was a friendly.

Sometimes you just have to ignore what others are doing and just try and play your best.

Did you have fun?

If so, don't worry about the rest at this point.  Just play, hopefully improve, and most importantly continue to enjoy the game!

Maybe this guy really bugged you. Because what if you had informed him, then what? He takes 3 clubs out? He's disqualified?

He did bug me, he plays too win and talks you out of your game- ' your standing wrong, your swing is wrong..etc'

he tried too beat you in your head before you hit off the tee.

best just not playing with him again lol

Yep, you know your answer. He'll be your standard golf club member who runs out of people who can stand to play with him. Always one...

Hope you enjoyed the round - just remember that whatever happens, the first time is always the worst and you'll feel more comfortable next time. I remember the first time a mate took me to play at a nice course (ranked about 30th in the UK, when at the time, I'd never played anything that cost more than £15 per round...) and I was so flipping nervous on the first tee because there was a man and a dog watching. Managed to hit probably my best ever 3 wood shot and have that memory to look back on every time I get first tee jitters!

I just now need to get that mentality in competitions...

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

Sounds like 2 issues to me - relaxed rules and flexible/moving rules.

I'm OK with relaxed rules between friends (which would include dropping nearby among one of my groups). What I cannot stand are the introduction of ambiguous rules , or when people move the goalposts as the game starts (either in order to gain advantage, or to be nice to somebody else playing) - if he had a handicap, he needed to say what it was at the start, and not change.

Despite being a gentleman's game, I find this is a game where people are often flexible with the rules in different ways for different reasons. Sometimes you are playing with somebody really relaxed, who counts their score at the end of the hole and forgets 1 or 2 shots a round, sometimes it's somebody who thinks it's ok to just go easy on themselves sometimes (gardening , nudging the ball, replacing an inch forward on the green etc)  without seeing it as 'cheating' , and sometimes it's just plain dishonesty.  It's up to all your group what you'll tolerate, but all bar the last category can be avoided by a commitment to keeping to a set of rules (or rather, being clear if there will be any deviations from standard rules).

I wouldnt dwell too much on it to be honest. The main point is to have fun, especially if its your 1st full 18 holes. I think you did rather well.

The guy in question, he is what i would refer to as "a bit of a bell-end" if you pardon my turn of phrase. You often get people like this. Some people are just compulsive liars and make claims about their handicaps to intimidate their "opponents" as they simply cant bare to lose against anyone.

I have had similar things like this in the past. If i get on the course "coaching" i politley advise them that unless they are at least low single figure handicap they are in no position to be giving me swing advice. They either accept or go off in a huff an play as a single.

If you get the rule nazi who tries to get in your head then get in theirs. One i had was a guy who tee'd off on the first with a Titleist and hit it into the trees, we all said to each other "he's lost that one" but low and behold he miraculously "found" it on the edge of the trees. We carried on and he holed out for a birdie. As he picked up the ball i noticed it was a Nike. ONe the lads we were with got his phone out and said he was in breach of rule 15-1 as he finished the hole with  different ball to the one he started and as he didnt declare his first as lost he incurred a 2 stroke penalty. He wasnt a happy chappy at all but it shut him up till the back 9 when he stormed off.

Russ, from "sunny" Yorkshire = :-(

Right.

And correct HIM next time. It's terrible etiquette to critique other golfers. Put him on the spot. Say something like....

So how long have you been playing? I'm surprised you're acting like this is your first time on a course. Seasoned players would know not to go on like you are .....

It will get under his skin.

Now that you put things in perspective - definitely you should have mentioned his other errors.

The only points this guy gets is esc, max # of strokes per hole, that only counts when he posts his handicap. I wouldn’t put too much stock in this blowhard, sounds like he plays fast and loose with the rules. Find another to round out your foursome next time
