Hello,

I think you should go to the range if you bought new equipment or want to work on an area of the game that you are struggling with during your rounds.  There is nothing that replaces on course experience in my opinion because you will be put in different lies and have to adjust to different course management situations.  I personally need to be on the course more because my game doesn't always translate from the range to the course. I recently got fitted for new equipment so I'am adjusting to new distances and feel with them.  I will continue to work with them at the range until I'am ready for the course.  I understand also there are time restraints of course which come into play.  A full 18 can take up to 5 hours these days so 9 holes is a good option or even an hour at the range.

Thanks

Everyone,

i cannot thank you enough for all of your posts. I did what I see hardly anyone doing on these forums( I took all the advice and used it). I ended up clearing out my lunch schedule and I have a full hour to practice at a range by my work everyday for a cheap membership. Now, that frees up my weekends just for play. My scores have yet to improve , but I know it will get there. Thanks so much everyone! Hit them straight....or at least, hit them hard.

Congratulations! The next step is to get some decent instruction, so you're practicing something that will improve your game.  Yes, you can practice your current swing, and groove whatever compensations you're currently making (we all make some types of compensations), but there's probably a limit on how good you can get that way.  Improve your mechanics, and you can go beyond that limit.

Definitely this.  I made the mistake of thinking a cheap year-long membership at a course and playing as much as I could would be more helpful in improving.  All I did was create bad habits.  All it took was my rhythm to be a bit off for my swing (and a round) to fall apart.  It's taken a lot of effort to get rid of those habits.  A swing can only be so bad if your fundamentals and mechanics are sound.

Heck - playing a 9 hole once a week or every other week, and going to the range once a week is generally what I do. In addition, I practice while I'm at home pretty much everyday in some way. There are tons of drills and etc. you can do right in your house.

Biggest things that have helped me so far has been: The 5keys, getting a lesson, slow motion video, the tons of free advice found here, and having realistic expectations.

Unless you have some serious physical limitations, I think with the time you're investing you can definitely get to a point where you break 100 every time.

You sound exactly like me. Given my limited time to get to play I usually play 9 on Sunday mornings and hit the range once or twice a week. As far as I am concerned it is all just practice right now. My goal is to get out for 18 at least once a month in the spring and summer.

And I am also getting lessons.
