From 20' we can roll balls down a Perfect Putter from the same height, same kind of ball, and make 1 out of 4 from 20' or so. Often less.

Putting is incredibly random. That's why you can't get too much better than 50% from 8', etc. The hole is small, as is the margin of error and random tiny imperceptible bumps, etc.

Even more so on slower, likely bumpier greens.

This is why when people can only get so accomplished as a putter. So much of putting is luck, hitting the right bump, catching the correct little imperfection to keep the ball online, etc. Heck, more often than you think you actually start a ball on an incorrect line only to get lucky and have it hit all the right things to make the putt.

Luck or just more variables that affect the ball at slow speed. I think of luck as more like hitting a putt way too hard but it hits the center of the cup and goes in. Imperfections can affect even a good putt with the right, Read, Speed and Bead.

Yes thats called luck...

Hitting (or not hitting) those variables on the green that make your ball either go in or miss the hole is luck. A putt started on the correct line but hits a small hole on the green and careens off is bad luck. Starting a putt slightly offline that hits an imperfection and in turn catches an edge and fall in is good luck.

On a slightly different not I found this article from 2010. It almost sounds like @iacas wrote it as so much of the information in it has also been shared by him on here. Either way it does a pretty good job explaining how long game is much more of a determinant on your score than putting, and how people can't seem to get there minds around that concept. In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.
