Oh my God x 10.

We have our big 3 day demo event going on now.  I spent the day there yesterday since temps were in the 60's and the next 2 days are cold and scrappy as usual.

I hit a lot of irons, wedges, drivers...but the Ping G400 max driver was insanely good.  I hit the other G400's and they were fine.  Then I wanted to see what all the talk was about over this driver.  Just using the 10.5 turned down a bit and the stock stiff shaft the first drive  I hit was so long and dead straight it grabbed my attention.  Teed up another ball...maybe even better.  I turned around to where the 2 Ping reps were standing and they just were staring.  I looked at them and said" Wtf?".  One of them said, that's crazy deep...jeez.  I said to them both ...that's nuts.  Waay to easy to hit good.

I went back to them before I left and tees up a few more...same thing.  I've never hit that many that good in a row.  I could have bought it right there on the spot.  I'm still at a loss for words over this driver.  Anyone looking for a new driver seriously needs to hit this.  If you can't hit this straight, time to take up a new sport.

No, didn't have $400 on me.

Current driver suits me just fine.  Not as good as this one, but not $400 worse.

They take credit cards.

I have the G400, was long but inconsistent, bought a Max to compare, and then hit 12/14 fairways with the G400. Then I developed back spasms and haven't hit the Max yet.

Looking forward to hitting it as soon as these stretches work out the back issues.

Yeah Desmond I know...I don't use the credit card for golf equipment.  It'd be a slippery slope with the wife.

Good luck with the back.

I'd have to see some numbers compared to my M2 anyway.  Couldn't see it land...need to know what it does when it does.

I tried so hard to like the Epic, I've seen a lot of people I play with having success with theirs. I tried different shaft and loft combos in an effort to make it work for me. I had some of my longest drives ever, but never felt comfortable or saw any consistency with it. When I compared it to the 400 max it was a no brainer for me. I'm a firm believer in the PING "straight distance" mantra. This club has been everything I hoped the Epic would be. It's long, and really forgiving. You have to be willing to try everything. All the OEM's make good equipment, the trick is finding what works for you.

Most drivers are pretty much the same if you get fitted for them. You can see a good difference on a properly fit club versus a non-fitted club.

Very few drivers are that much different on accuracy. If you are talking Ping versus SLDR (Taylormade), then yea. That is because the SLDR had a low and forward CG location. Ping is typically very low and back. Generally, it isn't that noticeable.

I have the Callaway Epic Sub Zero and I really like that club. I've never been a fan of Pings sound.

I was fitted at Ace of Clubs for my M2/ HZRDUS yellow HC and I agree...a properly fitted driver is a monster.  After seeing how good the non fitted Ping was all I could think about was  how it would compare to my M2.

This week I'll try to get on a GC2 to see what kind of numbers the Ping gives me.

I'm a ping fanatic, but I don't buy into the mega-head driver concept.

If you pound balls on the range and hit it 15 times in a row I'm sure it works great.

The problem comes when you hit it off the tee and then pull out a wood or iron for your next shot and it looks like a thimble.

The few times I've used something like this I find it screws up my other clubs and I never score better with them.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
