I just picked up a 904F three wood with a stiff graphite shaft as mentioned here:

http://www.hookedongolfblog.com/?p=324

I have hit it about 8 times now, 3 from the fairway and the rest teed up. Overall I love it but have one question: The ball flight tends to draw. I've hit two straight, one hook, and the rest had about a 10 yard draw. This is not normal for me - I hit a straight ball with a tendency to fade it.

Is it the shaft? Does this mean the shaft is too stiff?

All else being equal - Does a stiff shaft make the ball tend to draw?

If I reshafted it with a fishing pole would I get my fade back?

Or is it the other way around (the shaft is not stiff enough)?

Here is my question:

Stiff shaft = Hook
Flexible shaft = Slice
or is that backwards?

-Rich

I am not complaining about having a draw - I am just thinking about picking up a newer 983 driver and dont want that to draw (so I should go with x-stiff)

I think it is the other way. I'm not sure on this either but when I hit my wife's clubs at the range (less flex of course) I tend to pull it.

Generally speaking a shaft too stiff will cut or slice because the shaft doesn't give enough or create enough whip for the club head to come back to square.

I find it to be if I am used to using a flexible shaft and then go to a stiff shaft I will tend to draw it for a few shots, but then it straightens back out. My guess is that it varies from person to person.

I don't know the science of the proper shaft stiffness vs. swing speed, but from my experience with "avg" swing speed I found the soft shaft (R or L flex) will produce a slice for me. Going between S and X shafts didn't really change the left/right tendency... Ballflight is lower with X and I found it (on my 3W) the dispersion between shots is much smaller - more balls are within 10yds of target than S shaft.
Find a launch monitor and have yourself tested. Don't belive blindly all the manufacturer description, recommended swing speeds etc. Science is good, but experience is more gooder

Stiffer = slice. That much is just about true, if you put your normal swing on it. I can slice the hell out of a regular-flex shaft, too, but the tendency - with your normal swing - is for the ball to move left.

You said a stiff shaft, but the difference between the YS-6 and the Speeder and the Aldila (etc.) - all in the same flex - is very pronounced in that club... so which shaft exactly?

The club is square and neutrally weighted, so there's no draw bias built into the clubhead. I can tell you that much.

(P.S. I assure you that I find it only slightly amusing that you're wondering about your 10-yard draw. Just enjoy it! )

    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
    • Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.
    • Taking a crack it, but looks pretty clear. 11.1  Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence. a. No Penalty to Any Player If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence: There is no penalty to any player. This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment. Reading further down it looks like they have to play the ball as it lies. No replay from the previous spot.
    • I had an interesting one yesterday, a local qualifier for the US Senior Open, at the Cascades Course at the Homestead.  Well, first things first, the VSGA arrnged for the officials to play the Cascades on Monday at the players' practice round rate.  Its lots of fun, rather old-style (built in the 1920s).  anyway, a player missed a short putt, and (apparently embarrassed) took a step to be ready to tap the ball back in.  The ball lipped out, and hit the player's foot.  I was nearby, and they waved me over, and asked "What do we do now?"  I was pretty sure of the ruling, but asked them to wait for a few seconds while i double-checked.  I did have it correct, even though its one of the more confusing rules in the book right now.  I'll leave the correct answer out for now, in case anyone wants to guess, or research it, and post their ruling.
