The other day I went to DICK’S and hit some new irons (specifically the P770 and P790) liked the both and didn’t notice a HUGE difference between them 7 iron carry was right around 190 average total being 195-200 on average for both clubs 790 distance being a little further (5-10 yards) other than the P730 being Taylormades blade version iron I don’t know what’s much of the difference is between the P750 P770 and P790 so if someone could please explain that to me I would appreciate it. Being a 6 I assume the 730 or 750 would be best suited for me but I’m just trying to understand the difference between them.

Thanks!

Thomas

The increase in distance on the P790 was likely due to stronger loft and lower spin, which could affect the stopping power when hit into the green. Spin is just one of the numerous components that determines how quickly a ball will stop. Rick Shiels and Mark Crossfield have both done YouTube reviews on the P series of clubs which might help you make a decision.

Without knowing what the rest of your long clubs look like (hybrid, 2 iron, etc) you could do a blended set with the P series, something like P770 in 4,5,6 then P750 in 7,8,9,PW. If you wanted a blended set to include the P790, you'd have to be careful with the lofts since the P790s are stronger than the 770/750/730s.

It really comes down to what you want in an iron set. Clubs like the P730 and P750 arent going to be as forgiving on off center hits, but you will rarely (if ever) get a "hot" one that jumps off the face 10 yds further than expected. Clubs like the P770 and P790 especially give you more forgiveness, but also the increased chance of those random "hot" ones that could put you in a bad position on the course.

I know I wouldnt be comfortable looking down at a super thin P730, but if you grew up hitting an old set of blades, then it might not phase you.

Before spending $1,000+ on a new set, I recommend getting custom fit, where you can try out all 4 clubs with different shafts and see which irons combine the looks, feel, and performance that you want out of an iron set.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
    • I don't think that is true at all. That is off-topic here, I think.
