At one time, I was a fairly solid ball striker and then kids happened and I went from playing a lot to a little.  I guess over that time as I lost consistency from not playing, I started to pick up a few bad habits trying to maximize distance - notably being very flippy at the ball and trying to scoop it up.  So the last couple of weeks, I've been swinging around the yard and in the house trying to work on hands forward at impact.

Went to the range for the first time in awhile, hitting some half swing shots trying to work that feeling of hands in front of the ball.  I thought I was doing halfway decent until I slapped the iPhone down and taped the last 5-6 balls.  Everyone was me just not in a very good position at impact..........  weight seemed back at impact and hands certainly were not in the right position......... little right wrist angle at impact and a few inches after impact, my right wrist is already essentially flat.

Any suggestions for good drills around the house to work on at night in between the infrequent range sessions?  Someone suggested the impact bag and just take 50-60 half swings a night, even in slow motion at times where when your club hits the bag, work on being in the same, strong position every time, trying to engrain the feeling in the head.  Then work up the velocity of the swing.  Others?

Thanks guys, first time poster but this seems like a great site.

Hello and welcome to TST. The picture isn’t really a good angle. A video posted on ‘My Swing’ thread would be much more helpful. For now I’d start here:

Welcome to TST. You will have a good time here.

As for your hands ahead at impact issue, I have a full swing drill I sometimes use to remind myself of the same issue.

I just focus extremely hard on dragging the club head through the impact zone. I use the term "dragging" for lack of a better discription. My club head is not dragging on, or touching the turf. I'm not practicing fatties with this drill.

In my case, I don't really know just how far ahead of impact my hands actually are, but, I am pretty sure it's not very much.

You are on the right path with those drills, but it will take time to undo bad habits. The chip drill works well and helps you feel good contact. I do that with driver down to wedges and focus on keeping my right elbow bent and in front as well as hands in front at impact.

Watched them and I really like the 2nd and 3rd talking about weight on left side and then hand placement.  Thanks!

Interesting.  A buddy recommended a drill he saw where you wrap a large towel around the head and then pretty much practicing dragging the club through impact.  In order to drag the towel through impact with relative ease, your hands have to be forward and you have had to shift weight to the left............basically "pulling" the towel past the impact zone as opposed to if you flipped at the ball, you would essentially be "pushing" the towel through and beyond the impact zone, if that makes sense.

To learn the feeling, make half-swings with a sand wedge holding on with your left hand only. If you swing naturally, without manipulating the club, the hand will lead the clubhead. Don't hit balls, just make swings.

    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
