Hey all,

Long story short, I have an athletic swing for a beginner. My contact and ball flight is horrific though. All my contact is either little spurts shot at 45 degree angle from super open clubface, hit off the heel and go no where, or topped completely. Need help staying down on ball!! And getting my clubface around and square at contact (it is horrific, more than halfway through down swing my club toe is still pointing straight up and down)

Any help appreciated, trying to have fun with the game of golf!

Thanks ahead of time

Those little spurts sound like shanks. That wouldn't be from a super open clubface, it's from the ball hitting the hosel.

Those are shanks, hitting the ball off the hosel.

This is caused by a lack of keys 1 & 2, steady head and weight forward at impact.

A lot of this comes from getting better at keys 1 & 2. If you are required to flip at the ball then you are bringing a timing element into the swing.

First, what @billchao said. In the meantime check out the thread on TST Instructional Content under the 'info' tab at the top. Read the grip section. If your at the range anytime soon place something like a head cover, a board, or even a tee just on the far side of your ball. Place the object just far enough where if you hit the ball in the center of your iron your club head won't hit the object. I agree with Bill as it sounds like you are hitting shanks (which I am the king of). If you find yourself hitting the object then you are swinging outside in or you are coming into the ball hosel/heel first usually with a too closed face.
