IMO the 5 wood should carry 1 club further. I cannot hit a hybrid out of deep rough I use a 6 or 7 iron. I carry a 4 wood 200 yards 7 wood 190 and a 9 wood 180 a 5 hybrid 170

I have a 21* hybrid. For me, it is good for about 200 max. I can choke down and hit it 175-180.

I've kind of an interesting set. Driver (11.5 degree), 3W (15.5), 4i, 24 degree hybrid, 6i-SW, 60, 64, P. The 24 is good for 190 yds for me. I use the 4i off the tee if I need to hit a shot dead in the middle of the fairway and that's good for 200. My 3W is good for 215 carry and I don't know how far it rolls, but I need a perfect lie to hit it. I used to carry a 7W, but I don't see the need for it anymore. I also used to carry a 5W. Then I went to the 3W.

I tried the 19 degree hybrid and it just didn't cut it. I preferred the 7W.

My hybrids are Cobra BioCells. They are not set draw bias. I think they've got mojo. Unfortunately they are no longer made.

I'm doing a bit of a swing partial overhaul.  Working on more of a single axis kind of swing.  It's been a pretty easy transition so far.  It's nice not shifting weight, and while it doesn't feel more powerful, I'm consistently longer.  My old swing if I absolutely pure a 7-iron produced about 165 yards (36* loft, my irons are 20 years old), but my off-center hits (80% of them) were only going about 140-ish.  With this swing I'm about 70% pure shots, but my average is around 155.  So yes, less distance so far, but MORE distance on average.

I tested out a 7-wood.  Uh, those are absolutely wonderful.  Hitting HIGH and long tight draws with it roughly 200.  Gonna ditch the 19* hybrid and get an 18* 5-wood.  Bag will look like the following:

Driver - 11* (hitting 240 carry with 15-20 yards of roll)

3W - 14* (high and long.  Carrying 225 with an occasional 235+ carry rocket that comes out of nowhere)

5W - 18* (hoping to gap this around 215 or so)

7W - 22* (200-ish)

5i - PW (24* - 45* - May tweak the lofts a degree or two for proper distance gapping.  With the right shaft I am hitting the irons I'm testing about 185 for the 5-iron consistently, and I want them gapped at around 10 yards or so, putting my PW around 120 to 125.  Looking at Hot Metals in the 900 and 919 line.  Wondering if I can possibly do a mixed bag.  Maybe the 5 and 6 being a Hot Metal and 7-PW being the forged.  Also considering the Hogan PTX line as well.

GW / SW / LW (50* - 60* but will tweak for gapping off the PW.  Looking at the Hogan Equalizers.  Got to hit these, and they are really nice clubs for the money.

Basically a bag overhaul.  Sorry for hijacking my own thread. LOLz.

For me, my 5W is much longer off the tee as compared to the 3 Hy, but from the fairway or rough, I seem to hit the hybrid much more solidly and thus have more consistency and distance.

If I m playing a course where I need the 5W for tee shot on a long par 3 - then I will carry it - otherwise, I find myself going to the 3 Hy from fairway and rough.

Just an older guy with 7 or 8  clubs and a MacKenzie Walker bag

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
