Today’s Session 4-4-20

GOALS

  1. Takeaway- get into trail hip
  2. Move upper body forward (leaning tower) earlier. Feels like after. P2
  3. Hit ball well if possible. Not biggest concern today.

ALL PHOTOS AND VIDEOS ARE 7i

SUMMARY:

I ran into someone I knew today. He talked to me almost the entire time. So hard to focus. Still did my drills.

P1-P2

I got into my trail hip but maybe not enough?

I tried to move forward after P2, I was feeling the move too late the last time.

I think this is success. My upper and lower body are decently “stacked”. At least for me, Mr Quick Hips.

That was the decent and good, now for the bad.

It would seem that my stubborn steepness has returned. ☹️😩😭

I want to get this under control early, before it spirals.

Also, my club was laid off a few times at P4. This is not good for me right now. I need to get it barely across the line.

He was probably happy to have someone to talk to after being shut in for a few weeks.

I get what you're saying, but it's not that bad. In fact, I would say it's pretty good.

He was happy to be out. I’m playing golf with him tomorrow.

He is monster of a man 6’8” with anger issues and has been scared of germs for as long as I’ve known him.

He chipped his tooth fretting about the virus, and no dentists are open. He purchased some fake tooth thing that is coming to his house.

Very tightly wound. Should be fun lol.

Im glad that it’s not “too steep”. I am always worried about it sneaking back  in.

Today’s Session 4-6-20

GOALS:

  1. Takeaway - get some momentum in the club early, shift into trail hip.
  2. Transition - move forward “leaning tower” sooner. After P2

I did not get deep enough into my trail hip, but I did feel like I got the club flinging back.

P3-P4.5

I did an ok job of moving forward today.

With the early momentum and earlier move forward-the club felt like it really “hung at the top” for an extra second. Couldn’t really see it on video, but def felt different.

FOR NEXT TIME:

Keep the same momentum feels

Shift better into trail hip

Today’s Session 4-7-20

GOALS:

  1. Takeaway - get deeper into trail hip. Make sure to bump it back. Keep the weightlessness of lead foot.
  2. Backswing - fling club back after initial bump, move forward (leaning tower)
  3. maybe hit less hooks. I’m really hooking it too much.

I made better contact and hit less hooks with weaker grip, felt better too.

I did move forward well (for me), but not quite early enough.

I’m happy the club didn’t tip out

SUMMARY:

  • Hips bumped back better at takeaway
  • Did not fall forward early enough today
  • Contact was better with weaker grip
  • Hooks still an issue

Open the face a little bit. Ball will hook less. Your start lines might be too straight.

Today’s Session 4-8-20

GOALS:

  1. Takeaway - Bump trail hip more
  2. Move forward (leaning tower) after P2
  3. Do not back out of shot (upper body) after transition. Stay on top of ball and just move hips out of the way.

P1-P2

I got into my trail hip a little better today. Not quite there yet.

The fall forward. This is success for the time being

Trying to stay “on top of ball” after transition seemed to help give me a touch of forward shaft lean.

I hit way less hooks and I think less fat shots. Don’t know until I play

Slight problem

shoulders were not steep enough in backswing. There was a slight steepening tilt of body/shoulders right at P4.

NEXT TIME:

  1. Steeper shoulders going back. The “left side crunch” that I use for steep shoulders should go along with the trail hip going more “up” at takeaway.
  2. Keep trying to “cover the ball” after transition and into impact.

Today’s Session 4-12-20 (Easter)

GOALS:

  1. Takeaway - get into trail hip
  2. Move forward in transition move after P3
  3. Backswing - Steeper shoulder turn
  4. Backswing - have arms be tighter to shoulder, they’ve been flying away.

I hit the ball better when I did the drill. Not sure why?

Summary:

P1-P2

happy with the initial hip bump. It is starting to happen automatically and right away- almost before my hands take the club away (feeling)

P3-P4.5

The line is on the ball today.

I tried to keep the “structure in my arms and shoulders”. I tried to keep the triangle I guess.

I am happy with my centers ahead of the ball. Should eliminate fat shots.

Goals 3-4

  • Shoulder steepness stinks
  • happier with arms not “flying away from body”
  • tried to keep armpit tucked I guess
  • after session, I tried to bump hip back while keeping upper body more centered (laterally). I think I can keep shoulders steeper this way. Will try that next time.

  • 2 weeks later...

In the past couple weeks I had to transition from practicing to playing.

Too many shots with poor contact were the main issue coupled with “not knowing what impact felt like”

I have figured out my “impact feels” for now. I have proper contact and trajectory.

I cannot put the feels into words without sounding crazy. I will try to make a video showing the feeling next session.

Main issue is over hooking irons at times and not knowing why.

FOR NEXT SESSION:

  1. Steep shoulders in backswing
  2. Continue “flow” in transition
  3. practice hitting proper draws with irons to real targets

A tad right of target, like a yard or less. The irons just are hooking across the green and then more.

I’m so used to playing the fade with irons and knowing it won’t miss left. I have to get used to the draw. I don’t understand how to play it yet

Driver and wedges are excellent btw

Aim the face farther right.

Not your body. Just the face. Start with a slightly open face and adjust from there.

Today’s Session 4-27-20

Due to bad weather, haven’t been able to practice. Played a few times-so I just want to see where I’m at mostly.

GOALS:

  1. Steep shoulder turn
  2. See where swing is at
  3. Don't hook or block irons so much. Less extreme

P1-P294541C1A-0AC4-4CCF-A69A-88B7F52E3134.jpeg.af43555584468abb2fe28c875acea499.jpeg

Did not get into trail hip to set up the flow

Did not start flowing forward in this time. If anything, I’m still turning back.

P4.5

At least my hips aren’t flying ahead on their own. Also seem to be going downhill which is also good.

Tilts are no good

I’m actually hitting it ok, just hooking mid irons. I had to switch from practice to play mode. I don’t see these as devastating setbacks at this point in time.

Yesterday’s Session 5-2-20

GOALS: in order of importance

  1. Backswing: Steeper shoulder turn
  2. Takeaway: Get into trail hip
  3. Transition (P3-P4.5): Flow towards target

Both swings were good contact, decent shots

SUMMARY:

Goal 1, steep shoulders 82CED305-9BED-480A-8C22-3A5F42654A24.jpeg.ca204e7f604c59d29009027eb3973437.jpeg

Better than last time. I thought the backswing was ugly last night. But it doesn’t look that bad today.

I seem to have more trouble keeping my shoulders steep with longer clubs.

This is 7i. when I move to 6i- I seem to start having issues...maybe a setup thing? Unsure

I tried to set up with my butt sticking out (wanted help turning steep) felt like it would help

GOALS 2-3, Flow

I singled this out because I should be starting to move back towards the target here and am not at all.

Next time I will try to “move forward” after P2 when my arms are rising.

P4-P5

I did move toward target, just too late.

I felt worse about the session last night. We’ll see how it goes next time.

I was able to make a cool image. I’ll post it for fun. Would anyone rather see this as one image than the breakdown above?

Monday 5-4-20

All pictures/videos are 7i

Goals:

  1. Takeaway: get into trail hip, try trigger move
  2. Backswing: Steep shoulder turn (keep trying)
  3. Transition: Move forward after P2 (feeling)

If you look closely at the lead knee, there is a trigger move. I feel like I’m pushing down into the ground-then “jumping up into my trail hip” (or trail side)

This might help get my shoulder turn steeper, we’ll see

P1-P2

7EB9372B-74C6-45AB-9E16-8BB32C6D79C9.jpeg.cf436e4f61b862dafde6951d5af865c9.jpeg

I was really able to quickly get into my trail hip with the trigger move.

P3.5- P5ish

E2F813C8-CED7-4748-9724-B25CD36212D4.jpeg.3def37b589628804fa4824740be414fc.jpeg

Flowed toward target ok. Might get better over time with trigger move.

The quicker I get into trail side, the sooner I can go forward-that’s the idea anyway.

DTL

Shoulder steepness is ok, not great.

Club-face is also shut, can’t worry about it right now, that would be too much

Today’s Session 5-12-20

GOALS:

  1. Trigger move
  2. Steep shoulder turn
  3. Flow

7i Swings

Bad angle and super fat shot. Camera was low and only had one take.

P1-P2

7B494C15-8F52-48FE-B3A6-09617F243B05.jpeg.77d5760a94b7f75878c242ff90fa3e88.jpeg

Im happy with how the trigger move helps me get into my trail hip, especially the “up” part

P3.5-P4.5

09CFACA6-0FC6-4E85-A4D5-38A8A0DA7D10.jpeg.5add40bb07207fcf2273a8fc6cbc735b.jpeg

Flow wasn’t great here. Had a hard time doing shoulders, flow, and hitting ball well.

I practiced them separately, but the last bit of the session I spend piecing it together, for better or worse.

P7 impact

E07B922B-43DB-45DC-8C26-4B7B7CE302AF.jpeg.c03fbafb3c4d86406bdbdd5fa83f0e3c.jpeg

Doesn’t look that bad, but it was a 7i that went about 100 yards

Shoulder tilts

8E6B98BA-1DBB-41F7-9BEF-6F0E47BCC7B1.jpeg.02d5e3d92ca1aae626b7b920ece736cb.jpeg

Much better. But the steeper I turn my shoulders, the worse I seem to hit it. I can’t figure it out.

FOR NEXT TIME:

  1. Keep up the trigger move. Getting into trail hip is becoming “easy”
  2. Map a steep shoulder turn so I can focus more on flowing toward target sooner
  3. Hit better shots
Edited by Slim_Pivot
Forgot to add picture of shoulder tilt. It was success, so that one has to be in there.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
