See if anyone wants to take a challenge. We have a sporting goods store here that sounds old and no name golf clubs $1 each. My goal to put a basic set together and see what I can shoot. Think I will try 9 holes first. Goodwill thrift store clubs can be used also. Let me know if I'm only one crazy enough to try.

Do you mean cheap or crappy?  There are plenty of good clubs out there that are well made and serviceable...yet cost next to nothing.  I put a set together, for a friend of mine, by carefully shopping thrift stores.  The entire kit, bag included, ran 35 clams.  That isn't a reflection of the quality or utility of the clubs so much as it is their market value.  All of which is to say: I like the idea.  I'm going to borrow the set and see what happens.

Did similar here. Hippo Beast irons (£40 for 3-SW in mint condition), old Ping G5 driver, donated TM burner 4H, Players Choice 60* wedge.

Added new Cleveland putter, Adams 3w and John Letters 3H (no more than £45 each as end of line sale).

I also go for budget golf balls (£6-£10 or so per dozen)

Cost more than the thrift/charity shop clubs but still a lot less than buying big brand and they play really nice.

Russ, from "sunny" Yorkshire = :-(

In the bag: Driver: Ping G5 , Woods:Dunlop NZ9, 4 Hybrid: Tayormade Burner, 4-SW: Hippo Beast Bi-Metal , Wedges: Wilson 1200, Putter: Cleveland Smartsquare Blade, Ball: AD333
