My wife says after 32 years of playing my ping eye 2 irons I can buy any clubs I want. I haven’t had time to hit anything thing yet. But want opinions? I’m looking at the hollow body game improvement irons I’ve lost distance but still want to be able to work the ball but have forgiveness. I’m a 20 handicapper and hit my 7 iron 150 yards carry. With a fade. My miss is a pull.  I have narrowed it dow to 4 sets I’m wanting to try. First is PXG 1st gen because if discounts for veterans. Second is ping g700. Third taylormade p790 and last is mizuno jpx 900 or 919 irons. Any thoughts on which might be best. Thanks in advance

  • iacas changed the title to Which Hollow Body Irons?

I suggest getting a fitting done or at the very least try to find demo days for each of the brands where you can try the different models out and pick which ones give you the best numbers/which ones feel and look the best.

As a 20 handicap, you should probably be more focused on hitting consistent solid shots and having one shot shape instead of trying to work the ball both ways.

As a 20+/- handicapper myself I think I would also look at the Ping G400s. May be more forgiving then the G700, but then again I have not hit the G700. To lower my score I went to the other extreme and purchased a full set of Cleveland HB Launchers, 4 through Gap, but you need to like a hybrid design, (which I do), to even consider them. They have worked really well for me, so easy to hit. I never try to shape the ball, I just want it straight with less miss hits. Enjoy your search and like klineka said above try them all first. Take your time and BTW thank your wife!

I took 10 years off I was a 8 handicap. I still have my short game. Im gradually getting back my swing.  Im wanting new technology.my irons are all d2 swing weights and I’m hoping to get same. My lofts are weak on the pings eye 2 compared to new equipment. I’m really liking the PXG. Irons and the military discount makes them an option. Worried they may be surpassed by newer tech this spring as the golf companies catch up to pxg

I hit the ball solid. I’m inconsistent. I can work the ball

I demoed the Ping G700 last year and thought I was probably going to get them. Set up a fitting and found more consistency with G400. Also tried several others at the fitting (from Callaway, Taylormade, Titleist and Cobra), and G400 seemed a better fit so that’s what I chose.

Other choices out there as well. Ping has i500 and i210 also, and the G400 is being replaced by the G410. Titleist has AP1, AP2, AP3 lines.

Keep an open mind and have fun!

I think Ping might also have a military discount—check with their website customer service.

When I was fitted, I tried the G400, G700, Mizuno, Callaway Rogue, Taylormade and others.   All of them felt extremely different.  Some were close, some were not close to what worked for me.   If I was you, I'd wait until you got fitted to get clubs.

I’m getting fitted this summer after my swing grooves a little more.

Most fitters will tell you this isn't the time to get fitted.    The fitter can put you into clubs that will work for you for years with your current swing and any changes you hope to make.    Some people would wait forever to get fitted if they waited until they grooved their swings a little more.

I’m really liking the JPX919 forged irons. Going to try some out, but unlike you, my kids are both in college and no permission from my wife 😩

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
    • Generally speaking, extended warranties are a terrible deal and should almost always be avoided. They are a huge profit center for the companies that offer them, which should tell you almost everything you need to know about how much value most consumers get when purchasing them.  This is correct, and the old adage applies - only buy insurance when you can't afford the loss. This usually doesn't apply to most consumer goods.  To your second question, no I don't believe the offer is fair. They are replacing it, but it is not being replaced at "no cost to you". Since the amount being disputed (over $500) is non-trivial, I would probably push the issue. Don't waste your time on the phone with a customer service agent or a supervisor. They have probably given you all they have the authority to do. Rather, I would look at the terms of your agreement and specifically legal disputes. The odds are you probably agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute. The agreement will outline what steps need to be followed, but it will probably look something like this.  1. Mail the Nordic Track legal department outlining your dispute and indicate you are not satisfied with the resolution offered.  2. Open up a case with the AAA (American Arbitration Association), along with the required documentation. 3. Wait about 4-5 weeks for a case to be opened - at which point someone from Nordic Track's legal department will offer to give you the new model at no cost to you.  They certainly don't want to spend the time and energy to fight you over $500. 4. Enjoy your new Nordic Track at no cost to you. I recently entered binding arbitration against a fairly large and well known company that screwed me over and refused to make it right. In my demand letter, I made a pretty sizeable request that included compensation for my time and frustration. Once it hit their legal department, they cut me a check - no questions asked. It was far cheaper to settle with me than to send their legal team to defend them in the arbitration.
    • I never thought of looking at it on multiple purchases like you said.  Yes, the extended may help me on 1 or 2 items but not the other 5 or 6.
    • Day 84 - Forgot to post yesterday, but I did some more chipping/pitching.    Back/neck were feeling better today, so I did a much overdue Stack session.
