My Swing (zander1994)

I've been Playing Golf for: 3 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 17
My typical ball flight is: Push Draw
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Pull

It's still several months before it warms up here in Minneapolis, so I recorded myself warming up with a driver and 7 iron before a round of virtual golf on Lifetime's TruGolf simulators. I've noticed I really cast the club (especially with the driver) and seem to hump the goat no matter what club I'm using. These are things I will be working on in 2019 to hopefully improve my accuracy.

It's hard to tell too much without a better camera angle - we can't see impact or the bottom half of your swing really.

That said, your set up jumps out at me. Check out this thread for some tips on that:

Here is my first lesson ever (just had one at Golf Galaxy on Saturday). I was struggling with hitting a few push fades recently which is not my standard golf shot. Some adjustments to the grip fixed it right away, but I think Clint provided me a lot of other really good swing thoughts.

You stand too far from the ball with your arms out too far. They should be closer to vertical.

It’s been 3 years since I posted a swing video but this offseason I am planning on doing a lot of work on my swing (I’ll be taking lessons every 3 weeks for 4-5 months). I just had my first lesson and we are working on shallowing out my swing, neutralizing my grip and getting me to stand closer to the ball. The first video linked here is my swing at the beginning of the season (showcasing my steep over the top move) and the second video is my swing today 10/21 about two weeks after my first lesson. I am currently a 15 handicap. I shot 12 over twice this year and one time shot 9 over. 8 iron in both videos.

As someone who did this last summer and then had a tantalizing but disappointing season this year, remember that you need time to make the major mechanical adjustments sink in but then you also need time to learn how to hit shots with those new mechanics. Or at least I did (after doing all my mechanics work into a net).

On your swing, it isn't nearly wide enough at the top. Among other things, that makes it way harder to shallow the club on the down swing. And it's really difficult to change from a steep to a shallow down swing regardless! At the top your right arm should be making at most an 80˚ angle. And many (most?) are closer to 90˚. The drill that got me over the hump was to take a kids swim floaty and put it just above my elbow such that at 90˚ I was solidly starting to squeeze it and it felt like a major squeeze if I tried to close my elbow any more than that. Then you'll really feel it in your swing when you get narrow and fold your elbow at the top. It'll feel like you're taking like 1/2 swings in order not to fold too much.

Picking up from here:

You're early extending a LOT to hit out at the ball. It's part of why I said I don't really like creating that much axis tilt.

It's "a" way to swing out a bit more, but not really a good one.

Sorry to yuck your yum.

So for the past 4-5 months I have practiced with the lagshot training aid 1-2 times per week.

One one hand, I feel I am not coming over the top as much as I had in the past. On the other hand, I’ve noticed my takeaway is really from the inside now (too much from the inside). I am also still humping the goat.

I have played in the low 80s this season with this swing, including two 80s, a handful of 82s, and an 84 this month at a tough course I had never played before. I’m not sure if this swing is truly an improvement or if I am just playing better due to more play time this season.

I was really excited for this season. I’d been shooting in the low 80s pretty consistently and thought maybe this was the year I could possibly break 80. And then out of nowhere, I started shanking… it’s been a week or two and I feel disgusted every time I leave the range. I hit 50 balls in a row and every single one was a heel strike today. My coach is booked for the next two weeks but I have a lesson scheduled for the end of the month. Can someone help me diagnose this in the meantime? Any drill suggestions I could do instead of sitting on my hands for the next two weeks?

Your right elbow bends a ton and your path is WELL to the right. Look at, relative to your hands, the clubhead is at A6.

You'd do well to keep your right elbow much less bent and not shoving the hosel out to the ball.

To clarify, do you mean the path is too far in to out? I used to struggle with a terrible OTT move and have worked a lot on swinging more in to out over the past year so that’d actually make a lot of sense if I am overdoing it now. Any drills to get the right elbow in the correct spot that you may recommend?

Had two lessons over the past month. We focused on getting a bit more outside on the takeaway and put a towel under my left armpit to encourage more rotation through impact. Still not perfect obviously but I’ve stopped the heel strikes which I’m happy about 🙂

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
