It's like the multiple blades on a razor.  The first line hooks on to the hair, or line, and the second kind of yanks on it (but not so much that you notice)  The third blade, or line, takes care of business.  That way you can putt, or shave, without undue concern...trusting process and technology rather than relying on yourself.

The marketing hype I've heard on the radio says that the 3 line system is akin to the same "technology" used to land fighter jets on aircraft carriers! Wow! I didn't realize our silly little game was that important!

I just use the lines to ensure I don't accidentally place the ball on the green upside down. I can never remember which is the top.
