How important is the look of the club, really?

That's going to vary by the individual, but personally it matters quite a bit for me. If I'm going to spend $1,000 for a set of new irons for $500 for a new driver you better believe I'm going to buy ones that I like to look at.

I'd much rather take driver X that I love the look of that carries 265 yds with a 40 yd dispersion over driver Y that I cant stand the look of but carries 270 with a 37 yd dispersion.

Wow.  I did not expect to read that response.  I suppose we are just different in that sense.

I will gladly use a beat up old driver with "Joe's big toe" scratched on the head that gets 1% better results for me with pink golf balls that get 0.5% better results for me even if I have to listen to the snickering of my mate in the golf cart for all 18 holes.

Honestly, I might change my mind if I ever get to the point of having your index.  At the moment, there is no room for pride in my bag.

Really?  I remember when the square driver heads came out, my buddy from a major publication tried to give me one to try out.  Nope.  Nope. Nope.  Get it out of here, and if you play with that thing I'll be looking the other way.  Then when he hit it sounded like men's league softball...God what a turd it was.  But it did perform (not better, thank God). I'm glad that idea fizzled relatively quickly.

But that's just me. I have passed on many excellent clubs that I just can't stand the looks of. Too many good choices out there to go with something you don't like the looks of.

Then there were the Cleveland VAS irons. I'd rather quit the game than play those things:

For anyone curious, Trackman data is below. All 7 iron. Followed by the specs. "Gamer" is my current 10 year-old Mizuno MP-58s. One thing that really struck me is how poor my swing consistency was (even the fitter agreed). I hit some balls pretty well, but they would be followed by some terrible swings. The reality is, this happens on the course too, so I guess the numbers are somewhat representative. However, choosing specs based on a data set that is so widely dispersed with a relatively small number of swings seems like it could be off.

I agree with @klineka. The G410 seems to perform better for you. The JPX919HM, if I'm looking at it correctly, doesn't look much different from your current gamers if you throw out the two outliers.

I happened to be swinging better and hit fewer shots during that stretch. But yes, those numbers were good.

The G410s should be slightly more forgiving than the JPX919. Your stretch of "good swings" might actually be the club doing what it's designed to do.

That said....

I don't like their looks nearly as much though.

This matters. Buy/play what you like.

Depends on the person. Some care a lot, some don't at all. If looks didn't matter, player's clubs wouldn't all look so "traditional."

Personally I'd rather have a set of clubs I like looking at than save 0.5 strokes per round.

Definitely possible. For now, I'm sticking with my current irons. I'll try some other game improvement irons that look better to me when I get a chance.

Same here. It's not like I do this for a living.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
