My neighbor wants to cut an inch or so off the butt of his driver's shaft. He tells me he hits it much better if he chokes down on the shaft an inch and a half to two inches.

My question: Why cut an down the shaft? If choking down is working for you, why not just keep choking down?

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Anthony Kim always choked down. The club will feel a bit different to him if he does that. He can adjust swing weight to get it back though.

Good question. I have no idea. I know people can benefit from a shorter driver but then there might be work to do to get the swingweight right.

Why fix something that ain't broke?

First, cutting down the shaft isn't the same as gripping down on the club. When you remove weight you remove swing weight. The club will feel different during the swing.

Second, it's personal preference.

You're also removing static weight and tiny bit of back weight FWIW.

For me, static weight matters more than shaft length. Everybody is different.
