Best looking irons? Have your say.
Steaksauce replied to Hacksaw's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
The TaylorMade rac MB TP are probably the sexiest modern clubs I've seen and then for a classic blade look I like my Ben Hogan Apex. -
I played a 9 hole outing once with a scratch golfer and after we were done he liked my swing so much that he talked to my dad and wanted to work with me for a little while. I think he qualified for the US Open back in the day and was very knowledgeable. Most of the sessions were just minor adjustments but I was getting a club more in distance and I shot my low round 68 after just 2 weeks. Also I didn't have to pay as they were offered to me for free but I got very good results. Just a little fun fact, my dad started working with him at night by coincidence so I am informed on little drills and tips every once in a while just to make sure I'm still doing the right things for my high school tryouts this spring.

Titleist DT so/lo - what happened??

You may also want to test out a new sleeve of each and see if you like them better than the So/Lo. -
Traditional Lofts versus Modern Lofts
Steaksauce replied to TourSpoon's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm not too sure it's a good idea for most players because the differences in loft may be proportioned more percentage wise than just a set number. For example with a 4 degree difference the short irons may be roughly 10 yards apart for each club, but between a 3 and 4 iron the gap may be 15-20 due to the stronger lofts in the long irons. So basically instead 4 degrees always being say, 9 yards apart, the gaps are proportionate to the length of the club. -
In the spring time I am hopefully going to be able to swing into blades finally. I was up in the air between getting a used set of Mizuno MP 14s or reshafting my dads Ben Hogan Apex ('98-02) to steel. Reshafting should cost roughly $70. Mizunos Should cost betwwen $115 to $150. Just wanted to hear your opinions on this.

I never thought Titleist would make an iron that looked like a toaster.

I love it. Got a $120 Taylormade rac tp satin wedge for $50 with shipping in great condition. Although make sure that they have detailed pictures of the item, not just a description and also a 98% or higher feedback rating. Also looking to find a used set of Mizuno or Hogan blades soon on ebay

best blades of all time
Steaksauce replied to naples golf18's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I haven't been able to hit as many blades as I would have liked to by now, but I'll have to go with Hogan Apex and than Mizunos after that -
I find that when I was playing cast/cavity back irons that when I used my dad's Hogan blades that after feeling what a bad shot was on a forged 2-iron I always focused in and consistantly hit them on the sweet spot every time, and broke par for 9 holes in a gambling match using them. I just think that it gives instant feedback and puts much more importance on perfect mechanics than forgiveness like most modern day clubs now,

I like to do most of my strength training so I don't have to worry about soreness during the regular season. Also most of my golf practice is either finess shots with a shag-bag at the baseball field or proper positions in my swing so I don't get any bad habits installed and so the correct movents become a habit during spring.

By March 1 I want to get down to a 3 handicap in time by my highschool golf team tryouts I am looking to make the team and also become a starter as a freshman. I'll work on improving my putting and getting under 31 putts a round Hopefully I will get to play some nicer golf courses this year. I've only been able to play for free at a municipal course in Philly due to some recent econonical problems. Then I am looking to be scratch or better by the time I turn 16 at the end of summer. Also gonna try out for some national tournaments such as the Public Links and Junior Amateur. Progress from last year; 35.2 to a 7.1 from last March to November.

I haven't used the Vokey wedges, but I have just recently been using a milled face wedge and it has been fantastic. And I don't think anyone could disagree with the quality of any Titleist golf equipment.

How many of your are Ebay buyers?
Steaksauce replied to ChvyKc's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I like being able to try out the item being purchased first but sometimes the deals on ebay can just be too low to turn down. I've bought my Taylormade r580 xd from Golf Galaxy for $50 I got my Hogans for $75 from my friend who is basically a drug dealer but with golf clubs and my Taylormade rac TP sandwedge for $40 on ebay when new it is over $110 So basically I just shop wherever the best deal possible is. -
Once you get the swing right, you can just use the same motion with a different club that will give you a slightly different ball flight and distance. I would teach a greenside chip, bump and run, and a 7:30, 9:00 (1/2) pitch shot. I thing that helped me most with my short game was The Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz After reading that I started chipping in constantly and my pitch shot consistancy became much better.

need help selecting new irons
Steaksauce replied to ohfreeride's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Definately forged. Probably some kind of perimeter weighting but if you can musclebacks I'd go for that. Also I'd narrow it down to 3 that you like then find the cheapest. -
I have a set of perimiter weighted forged Hogans, which I think were one of the first styles made for that, and they seem to be working pretty well with a good feeling at impact and slightly more forgiving than blades, although it is still very noticable on a mishit. Hopefully once I get a little better I can trade these in with my dad for his Hogan Apex blades next year. For some reason I seem to focus so much more with them and rarely ever hit a bad shot with them. Probably because I know I won't be able to feel my hands for the next 3 holes if I do.

How do I stop coming over the top?
Steaksauce replied to powertrip240's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Practice letting the club drop with gravity at the top of your backswing. You'll see that your hands should fall right on line with your toe line. Another way is a thought from Ben Hogan's book The Five Lessons where he imagines a pane of glass lying on his shoulders, repesenting the swing plane. If you swing over the top the glass would get shattered and pretty much ruin the swing. Just a few thoughts. -
You need a sharp decending blow into the the ball, usually taking a fairly large divot after impact. Along with that premium golf balls such as a Pro V1 with a good wedge that has sharp grooves generate a lot more spin using that technique.

The Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz. After reading this I started chipping in or just missing nonstop. Also good impormation on short game stats. The Five Lessons by Ben Hogan. Along with this and his clubs I shot one of my lowest rounds soon after.
-
About 7 handicap now. My putting has been killing me lately. I've been stricking the ball better than ever, especially with my "new" forged Hogans, but my putts have been about 35-36 per round. When I was younger (9-12) my putting was fantastic but I seem to have forgotten how to now. Hopefully by March I can remember in time for the golf team tryouts.
-
As long as I'm playing a good ball, I'll usually get about 3-4 rounds out of it being that in the last few months I've not been losing them much and even with the backspin, I don't see a noticable amount of damage on any them that would affect performance.
-
I'd go with greens being that I'm pretty good with every part of my game except alignment, which constantly screws me over and it should be the easiest part of the game. Also I've seen rounds where pros have hit every GIR and in the interview say they haven't been putting well but still shoot a 66.

Whose PGA Tour Player's Swing You Like the Most?
Steaksauce replied to ronaldkuntoro's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Fred Couples is by far the smoothest. Am also told it is very similar to my swing so that always put it up there too.
