The four Big Cats at Ocean Ridge is a good deal. Tigers Eye and Leopards Chase are the two higher end courses there. Play them last. If you play them first you'll be diappointed in Loins Paw and Panthers Run. But if you play PR and LC first, you'll like them and then top it off by the other two. Has anyone played the courses at Barefoot Resort?
sabram replied to jerodd's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I've played all four Barefoot courses, all of them more than once excep the Dye course which I just played this month for the first time. All four courses are worth playing. Norman is generally thought of as the fourth best there. You will get arguments from many people about which of the other three is the best. They each have their supporters. Dye is the toughest, but a lot of the difficulty is an illusion. There are lots of huge wste bunkers and some forced carries, but the fairways are wide and the carries aren't bad if you play the right tees. The course is gorgeous and makes you think. My entire group loved it. Dye is a semi-private club that has its own club house. The service there is fantastic. The other three BF courses share a clubhouse about a mile away. The Love course is a woodland course with greens influenced by Pinehurst #2, with some false fronts and sides. There are faux ruins that come into play on a few holes, which some people like and others don't. The Fazio course has lots of fairway bunkers but many of them are just eye candy and don't come into play. The par threes on Fazio are interesting and pretty. I think you'll be happyb playing all or any of these three. Here are links to my photos of the BF courses: http://sports.webshots.com/album/579929363toaSyb BF Dye photos http://sports.webshots.com/album/570513900QVSgqT?start=24 BF Fazio photos http://sports.webshots.com/album/562767212CyJfgZ BF Love Photos Other favorite courses in Myrtle Beach are: The Dunes Golf & Beach Club - The back 9 is perhaps the best at the beach True Blue - an amazing course Caledonia Grande Dunes Heritage Tigers Eye The Moorland and Heathland Courses at Legends are great value, but are crowded with slow rounds unless you get out very early in the morning. -
Not just maintenance. How did they build it?

Stonewall is about 30 minutes south of DC. A few miles farther south is Augustine, which is a great course Here is a link to pix of Stonewall: http://sports.webshots.com/album/562063957rRcmCo -
March and April are peak golf months in MB so the green fees will be high. Long Bay is a decent course. Here's a link to pix. http://sports.webshots.com/album/569347460sORiXS - Long Bay Pix The best bang for the buck in MB are the Legends courses. They have 5 high quality courses; Moorland, Heathland, Parkland, Heritage and Oyster Bay. Breakfast, lunch and 2 beers are included with the round. In genereal, if you play in the afternoon you can get lower green fees.

Wolf Creek is a must play. Coral Canyon is in nearby St George's Utah and is also an excellent choice. Here is a link to my pix of Wolf Creek and Coral Canyon. http://sports.webshots.com/album/557768692fBmMJz The Chase at Coyote Springs is an excellent course and not that tough from the right tees. It is not as unique as Wolf Creek but does have great secenery. It is in the middle of nowhere and an hour drive from Mesquite. Pawley's Plantation or Founders Club in MB?
sabram replied to JUDGE SMAILS's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
If you didn't care for True Blue, I'd say skip Founders. Pawleys is a good choice. If you like Caledonia and want to play another course of a similar style, you can consider Heritage or Willbrook -
Pawley's Plantation or Founders Club in MB?
sabram replied to JUDGE SMAILS's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I've played both and would give the nod to Founders, although some of my MB trip group prefer Pawleys Plantation. The front nine at PP is nothing special, but the back 9 has some cool holes along the marshland. The greens at PP were very heard and fast. Hard to hold and found myself rolling off many greens into bunkers. FC doesn't have the ambiance to match the back 9 at Pawwleys, but it does have a nice consistenet style throughout, lots of big waste bunkers, and a couple holes with large elevation chnages , at least by Myrtle Beach standards. If I was going to play 36 with Cally as my first 18, I'd choose True Blue. Cally and TB are my favorite 36 hole combo in MB and since the two courses are affiliated you can probably get a discount to play both. Founders is sort of "TB lite", If you haven't played TB you should. Here are links to pix: http://sports.webshots.com/album/570513900QVSgqT?start=60 Founders http://mbgolfpics.multiply.com/photos/album/6/Myrtle_Beach_2003#photo=93 Pawleys Plantation http://mbgolfpics.multiply.com/photos/album/14/Myrtle_Beach_2008#photo=103 True Blue -
The ASU Karsten Course and Longbow are good courses and convenient to ASU. I'd suggest Southern Dunes which is about 20 minutes South and Whirlwind (two courses) which is very close.

Myrtle Beach - Mid April - Course Evaluation?
sabram replied to SpacklersEdge's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
The two Pearl Courses are pretty good. I haven't played the other two, but from everything I've read and reviews of friends who have played them they are not anywhere near the top courses in Myrtle Beach. There are seevral threads here about MB courses. The best "bang for the buck is to get a package from the legends group. They have 5 courses to choose from and include breakfast, lunch and two beers. All 5 of their courses are very good and the green fees are quite reasonable. For rveiews of MB golf courses check out Myrtle Beach Golf Talk at this link. http://www.myrtlebeachgolftalk.com/tabid/111/aff/3/Default.aspx Then get a quote from Brian Noblin who runs that site. -
I've played all of the courses on your list except Debordieau (which the Carolinians pronounce "Debbi-do"). Cally and True Blue are as good as it gets. They are both designed by the late Mike Strantz and very different layouts. Cally is short and tight and looks like a beautiful botanical garden. The 18th is a great finishing hole with a second shot ovber water. True Blue is a big brawney course with big bunkers and big greens. Willbrook is a pretty southern style country club course. Laid back atmosphere. Play it before Cally and you'll think it's great. After cally you migth be let down. Founders Club is sort of a True Blue "lite". Like True Blue it has lots of big bunkers. It has many pretty and challenging holes, but play it before True Blue. 7.8.12.14.and 18 are my favorite holes at Founders. World Tour has holes that are based on famous holes from around the world. It's good but not great. It is fun playing "Amen Corner." Kings North is pretty good. Nymbr 3 a shortish par 4 that dares long hitters to try to drive the green across a long lake (rather than wuss out by going across to the fairway on the right. Number 6 is a par 5 called "the Gambler" with an island fairway that again challenges long hittrs to go fro the green on the second shot rather than take the long and safe way around the perimeter. Number 15 is a nice par 5 ith a blind tee shot. Don't slice your tee shot as there is water hidden right. The par threes are good holes too. (see photos linked below). I've played KN seceral times. Always in good shape, crowded and slow pace. There is not a bad course on your list. You will have a great time. Cally and TB are the best of a very good itenreary. Here are links to photos of the courses you are playing (taken my me, except fro the last link.) http://sports.webshots.com/album/570513900QVSgqT - Caledonia http://sports.webshots.com/album/570513900QVSgqT?start=60 Founders Club http://sports.webshots.com/album/569342510nOQHcD - Kings North http://sports.webshots.com/album/569345876dnyXZb - Willbrook http://mbgolfpics.multiply.com/photos/album/14/Myrtle_Beach_2008 - World Tour and True Blue

Celebration is a nice layout and was in good shape the few times I've played there, although I haven't been there in more than a year. I haven't checked Golfnow or the other sites to see if they have any discounted green fees. Celebration is usually on the higher side of green fees. Here's a link to photos of Celebration. http://sports.webshots.com/album/571415820VzNsUn -
In that case, Pasatiempo is a must play. If you want to play 36 holes that day, there is a local course nearby called DeLaveaga. If cost is not a factor, Play Pebble Beach if you can get a tee time. However, I don't think they make advance tee time reservations unless you are staying there.
-
Your map has a line connecting La and SF, but if you are starting in SF and eending in nLA, you'll miss the drive bewteen SF and LA, which means that you'll miss Pasatiempo, and Pebble Beach. Here are some suggestions. Some of these are expensive. They all have websites Near SF: Harding Park, Wente Vineyards, Cinnabar, Half Moon Bay, Cordevalle and Poppy Ridge. Less expensive are Metropolitan and Monarch Bay Las Vegas - Paiute (3 courses) Primm Valley (2 courses), Shadow Creek, Cascata, The Chase, Bears Best Mesquite - Wolf Creek St Georges Utah - Coral Canyon L.A - Rustic Canyon, Los Angeles National, Ojai Valley Lost Canyons, Robinson Ranch, Industry Hills, Trump National

Looking for a place to hold Orlando area golf outing
sabram replied to jetsknicks1's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Orlando is always one of the best places for a winter golf trip. Good weather, lots of golf choices and lots to do. If you are looking for a package with lodging and golf togther at the same location, OCN and Mission Inn are good choices. MI has one great course ("El Campeon") and one okay course, The lodging is okay and the food and service is excellent. MI is secluded and far from the theme parks and tourists. OCN has two excellent courses, but is not a resort like MI. It's just golf, but good golf. There are so many options to choose from in Orlando. If you want to spend a little more, Reunion has three courses that I like, great condos and service. Championsgate has two courses and a nice hotel. Downtown Diseny has to many hotels to choose from and lots of golf both on site and nearby. Grand Cypress has 45 holes and a high- end resort and of course Bay Hill, but that's quite expensive. If you aren't looking for a "stay and play", and want to save some $$, I'd get a cheap hotel through Orbitz or Expedia and play the courses north of Orlando: Sugarloaf Mtn, Deltona, Debary, Timacuan, Victoria Hills and Black Bear are good choices and you can get good last minute rates on Golf Now and other tee time websites Another good choiuce is on the Western side of the state - World Woods in Brooksvile has two of the best courses in Florida that are not expensive and there are some inexpensive hotels nearby. http://golfcourses.weebly.com/orlando-fl.html - -Best Orlando courses -
How far south do I need to go to golf?

Willingers. (Only Kidding.) Carolinas are hit or miss this time of year. If you want to be assured of denet golf waether, Florida, AZ or Mexico are the best bets -
Those are all nice courses. I've played thenm each several times. Caledonia and True Blue are two of my favorite MB courses. Willbrook and Prestwick are two very intersting courses that are under appreciated. I like them a lot. Here are links to photos of those courses that may help get you psyched for the trip. What are the golf course clusters in NC?
sabram replied to nevets88's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Brunswick County, NC, just across the state border from Myrtle Beach SC must qualify as a "golf cluster". The Villages of Shallotte, Calabash etc have dozens of golf courses in a small geographic area: Rivers Edge, 27 holes at Carolina National, St James Plantation (4 courses), Leopards Chase, Tigers Eye, Panthers Run and Lions Paw, Oyster Bay, 3 courses at Sea Trail, 27 holes at Thistle, Farmstead, Crow Creek, Brunswick Plantation, Lockwood, Bald Head Island, 27 holes at Sandpiper, two courses at the Pearl... -

The better courses in and around Vegas usually cost more than $100 per round. Check out this link. The ones lists as "best bang for the buck" will be less than $100. If you can get a round at any of the Pauite courses for less than $100 that is the place to play. http://golfcourses.weebly.com/las-vegas-nv.html
