Tournament Golf History - Offshoot of Tiger/Jack GOAT Discussion
sheepdog replied to turtleback's topic in Tour Talk
And Hogan often consulted people on his swing, and what they saw. But Hogan could be a real A hole when asked for advice, ask Gary Player. Story is Player asked Hogan to look at his swing and give him a few tips. Hogan asked Player what company's clubs he was playing. Player said Dunlap. Hogan told him to go ask Mr. Dunlap for advice. -
A year's hard work on the putting green. Wouldn't leave it till I found satisfaction in something I did. Amazing when you have confidence in making every three footer how your scores go down.

Lots of thoughts about Tiger being exhausted. He'll have to be in shape at Augusta with those hills, especially the walk up 18.
-
Jack would have hit a 3 wood at 18 today if he was in Tiger's situation.
-
Definitely not a Tiger lover but I'll hand it to him, he impressed me doing what he's done after all he's been through. Great round by Paul Casey.

Maybe there should be a special section for a**holes and steroid users. I don't think there was ever a bigger a**hole than Ty Cobb but Bonds comes close, read about his college career. Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Clemons, Pete, Palmero, and A Rod could then be in the hall. Bonds the greatest hitter, what a joke. As far as the greatest hitter no one with the possible exception of Lou Gehrig or Ted Williams, touches Babe Ruth. He had a lifetime average of 3.42, only 2 points less than Williams, with 714 HRs and only 8399 at bats. Think what his batting numbers would have been if he had been a full time outfielder. Give Ruth another 1448 at bats, which Bonds has more than Ruth and which is roughly 3 years worth and only a paltry by Ruth standards, 25 HRs a year, and he's the HR leader. On top of that Ruth started his career as a great pitcher with a lifetime e.r.a. of 2.28, 94 wins and only 46 losses. Only Walter Johnson rivaled Ruth in the years Ruth was a pitcher.

That's just the way I took it since you were comparing him to Tiger's obvious number 2.

Staying at the hotel I paid $225 to play Pinehurst 2 in 1996 and $12 to play Davy Crockett Golf Course and Goat Ranch in Memphis.the same week.

Dilemma with old wedge...keep for prctice or sell
sheepdog replied to Valleygolfer's topic in Golf Talk
My lob wedge is a 2008 model, rust helps spin doesn't it -
Mickelson was number two to Tiger, Compare the number two to Nicklaus that played the PGA tour full time which would be Arnold Palmer, 62 wins 7 majors, or Tom Watson, 39 wins and 8 majors, not Trevino.

Might want to check out Billy Casper's record before saying he was a notch below. The guy won 51 PGA Tour events and is generally regarded as the most under rated player of all time. The man was also regarded as the best putter of his time.

Well after reading the last ten pages I find out that Tiger is strung out on steroids and Jack's a racist. Brother this whole BS thread is nothing but a waste of time. I think I'll go back to political forums, they make more sense.

Yeah that's why everyone is still talking about it 32 years later, It was a nice solid round. I bet if Tiger is down by 4 at the turn on Sunday he'd take a nice solid back nine like Jack had that day. Of course the media would hail it as the greatest back nine since Bobby Jones was a kid.

Do you think now that Tiger is back at his house he's pulling for Sam Saunders?

Is anyone other than Tiger playing there this week?

Not worthy of the HOF but for a time on tour people paid just to see Daly hit a driver. For about 10 years there was just no one on tour longer. Watching Tiger play with him back around the early 2000s, Daly was constantly 20 yards past him. Tiger was just beating his brains out. Greg Norman and Freddie could keep up with Davis Love off of the tee. Maybe an edge to Love but not to the degree Daly could hit it past them. George Bayer at 6'5" and 230 lbs.was as long as Jack, he just never won much of anything. Jimmy Thompson was as long as Snead.but again never won much of anything.

He better start hitting fairways.

Not true, Julius Boros won the 68 PGA at 48. Tiger will never win a major again. I don't think his mind will let him, to many doubts and crazy things going on in his life. .

Probably more than a few. I asked him about Brian Alexander who used to be his caddy, lives in Memphis and runs a public golf course and he just looked at my wife and I and laughed. Then he cussed one of his toadies......in front of my wife. We got out, I'm sure he was going to his suite. To be honest he does a lot of fine things for various charities around here and as I stated was friendly as heck the next time I dealt with him. Brian has nothing but great things to say about him.

I've met John twice both times at a casino. Once I rode an elevator with him and his entourage, he was the biggest prick I'd ever met. About a year later he was playing two $100 machines at the same time. He was surrounded by security. Some lady wanted his autograph and he went above and beyond to please her, posed for pictures, all smiles. I think he's a Dr. Jekill, Mr Hyde type. He's a legend at Chickasaw Country Club here in Memphis. Before he won the 91 PGA he played there often. Everytime I played there someone would show me a place he'd hit a 350 yard drive, a lake he'd carried, a tree he went over.

The Best Golf Courses in Every State
sheepdog replied to dennyjones's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I don't care what any magazine or internet site has to say the very best golf course in the great state of Tennessee is Memphis Country Club. It's an old Donald Ross course from 1910. You better have a short game and a putter. The usual Ross upside down saucer greens that are slicker than a linoleum floor. Great layout though it has always ate my lunch. -
Most Difficult Course You’ve Played
sheepdog replied to HJJ003's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Pinehurst number 2 in 1996. My buddies took me there cause I was fixing to get married. They wanted to see how much money we could spend in a week. Played it all the way back, I never hit so many 4 and 5 irons in my life. Had a terrible caddy. Did birdie 18, it's like 445 up a hill. The caddy told me that Davis Love hit a driver and a 9 iron to it and I told him that just took $20 off his tip. -
Played Any Quirky Courses? Name and Details!
sheepdog replied to nevets88's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Played Pinehurst number 1 pretty quirky after playing number 2 and 4. Shot 84 on number 2 from the tips, birdied 18. Had a caddy that couldn't read a green if his life depended on it. Stopped asking him questions after 5 holes. Shot 70 from the tips of 1 and 78 all the way back on 4. Number 1 was pretty short. 2 was the toughest course I've ever played. 4 was just right. -
I said my piece and you tore it down adding that you have little regard for my opinion. Criticism or well founded disagreement I can take but I dealt with architects for 30 years. Some fresh out of college some with 40 years in the business that had no regard for my opinion. Those were usually the ones that started to have trouble six months after completion of the job. I'm retired and don't have to put up with that anymore. So there. Done here. This place have a history section or a section for club collectors? I'm 5 feet from a 1964 Wilson 8802 putter a Ping Karsten Co. Anser and a 1941 MacGregor Tommy Armour driver. They used to bring good money. Does anyone talk about that kind of stuff here?

Older people look at things in different ways than younger generations. It's about the life I led. I said that I respected his opinion and he said he didn't respect mine. I think I know when someone is pulling my chain. As a person I know that he doesn't give a **** about my opinions. Says something about him to me. Gary Player agrees with me, Brandel Chamblee doesn't, so?
