30 yard drive distance increase overnight? Did this ever happened to you?
jgreen85 replied to rkim291968's topic in Golf Talk
Yes, this happened to me about 6 weeks ago. I knew I was casting with my driver, but couldn't figure out how to stop. One day at the range I tried something different and boom. So far I have kept the additional distance, I was carrying driver 245 today at the range. My round on Friday, distance averaged 260-265 of easy power. -
I certainly enjoy the golf more when there is better "flow," but it has no impact on the amount of golf I can play. I already enjoy golf even with 5hrs rounds, but even 4hr rounds limit how often I can play.

Powerball: What would you do with $1.5 Billion
jgreen85 replied to Gator Hazard's topic in The Grill Room
I wouldn't buy my own course. I would focus on renting out golf courses for the days I play. I'd buy up the tee sheet at all of the nice public courses. Pace of play issues would be eliminated for me. Kind of like flying private. I'd also take helicopter where I could to avoid driving as much as possible. I'd also buy a stake in the San Antonio Spurs. Hopefully something like 10% which would cost $40-60m. -
5 hi maintain a 5 for a full year 7hrs per week of dedicated practice.

Ready Golf vs Waiting for everyone at the green
jgreen85 replied to gregsandiego's topic in Golf Talk
bolded and underlined statement to me is the definition of ready golf; perhaps add "safely" before "play." This imo is again why golf is so slow; people seem to enjoy the standing around on the green. -
Ready Golf vs Waiting for everyone at the green
jgreen85 replied to gregsandiego's topic in Golf Talk
I think the key to the OP is he's ready to play and away. I would putt out if he was away and not ready. That does seem strange they're making you wait while they putt out; if you were still walking to your ball, I would putt though. I do not think they need to wait for the OP to reach the green to putt out though. -
Played Pebble Beach on Friday
jgreen85 replied to metaswinger's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I played Pebble last April. It's almost too much to take in. -
I was in Chicago in September. I played Cog Hill #4 and The Glen Club. I preferred #4 b/c The Glen Club was tougher - very penal rough. Cog Hill has several courses in addition to #4 (the one the Tour plays at). Both were nice. I was the first one off at #4, so was able to finish pretty quickly. I recommend both though they're pricey. Greens at The Glen Club were crazy fast.

you're coming to the valley during the peak golf season. Courses I play in the summer for $10, now expect $40-50. TPC runs $40-50 in the summer, obviously you're seeing the peak rates. I suppose mvmac has never been out to Troon North as he consistently leaves them off of his list. We-Ko-Pa is great (got my hole in one on the Cholla course), Talking Stick is good but not special. Troon North, imo, is the gold standard of desert golf. Boulders is great as well.

what's in the area for non-golfers?
-
These are the courses I plan to play. I don't think dormie is in the area, but I'd make a day trip. No plans beyond the slate of courses. Pinehurst (No.2) Pine Needles Lodge & GC Linville GC Tobacco Road GC The Dormie Club Pinehurst Resort (No.8)

My family of 3 and mother-in-law will head to Pinehurst. Any tips/advice?

Trip went off with out a hitch save Texas' showing against notre dame. Arrived Thursday afternoon. - Drove to The Glen Club - tough course. Thick rough and deadly fescue on many holes. Game wasn't as sharp. Great round and good facilities. Fastest greens I've ever played and I adjusted well. I don't think I had the proper wedges for the rough. I was able to shower after my round which was great. $165; seems to be semiprivate as I played with two members. - drove to downtown Chicago. Dinner with work friends and we Howled at the Moon at Howl at the Moon. Great time. Lots of Blue Moons. Friday: - woke up early and still a little woozy from the night before. Drove to Cog Hill. I was the first one off as a single. Dubsdread was much more playable than The Glen Club. Rough not as thick and no deadly fescue. Being the first one off allowed for a 2.5 hr round. I played well and I really liked the course. I'd love for that to be my home course. $165 though. - drove back to hotel to shower and headed to Wrigley Field. Game was pretty cool because half of the stadium was wearing burnt orange. The color of my alma mater. Cubs blew out the diamondbacks. Saturday - morning headed to south bend for Texas v Notre Dame. Tailgating was great. LOTS of Texas fans. Game was....... Sunday - brunch with friends and flight home. Great trip. I highly recommend both courses next time you're in Chicago. Downtown Chicago is sweet as well.

I think the key to this question is location and pace of play. I'd love to move back to Texas. I've never played there, but Briggs Ranch is supposed to be the best private course in San Antonio. Membership is limited to 400 and it's golf only, so PoP has to be decent right? When I go to Austin next, I'll play the barton hills courses and see if that might be my course. I wouldn't want to live in pebble beach/monterrey and I wouldn't want to spend 5hrs on Pebble every day either. If I stayed in Phoenix, Troon North (either course) would be my choice.

In this case, I don't think a new law limiting this is necessary. What needs to happen is the firing and public shaming of this CEO and those like him. In this country, it's fine to make a profit if you add value to someone's life; it's wrong to profiteer. This guy is simply displaying what's wrong with wall street and a large proportion of the 1%: if it ain't illegal, DO IT! No morals and no sense of right/wrong. This person needs to receive the negative consequences of his anti-social behavior. He needs to be ostracized and ignored by society until he behaves in a socially acceptable manner.

Length of tees played should not matter at all. Those playing further back should have the game to support the additional distance.
-
I'm not advocating strict enforcement of the 3.5 hrs. I'm only recommending that become the expectation and allow people to shoot for the moon and if they miss, land among the stars. A lot of people fall back to the "hey, POP is 4.5 hrs and I'm on pace." This removes that excuse.
-
seems like courses should post faster minimum rounds. Does anyone think a course will lose business by saying the acceptable POP is 3.5 hours? I can't imagine someone saying "oh, I can't go there because POP is too fast." I can't see any negatives from this.

The chart references a "tour type ball." any material changes attributable to a non-urethane ball?

I think I changed my mind on this though. In most sports, the playoff events don't play a role in determining "regular season" awards (MVP, PotY, CY Young, etc). If the PGA Tour has a true "Playoff" then these last 4 events don't count towards these awards. Clearly, Jordan is the PotY (MVP) of the regular PGA Tour Season and Day is the PGA Tour Champion. Of course, this being golf, it has to be a sponsored award lol.

aren't all of those tournaments you listed around the same time? i know valero/shell/masters are back to back to back. Basically, Spieth was hot march/april and Day is hot july/august. Cancel each other out. The big bogie is US Open; Spieth obviously won = very impressive. Day finished T-9 despite the vertigo; also very impressive? 1,2, T2, 1 is more impressive than a potential 1, 1,12, 1, 1? For the sake of the PGA Tour's "Playoff" the Tour should certainly hope not. I think you're crazy to say it's tougher to win in the regular season than the playoffs. These aren't just 70/30 random players; these are the 70/30 BEST players on Tour this year. Go look at the fields of the valspar/valero/shell. They don't touch the fields in the playoffs. Literally, the playoffs are only for the best players on Tour this year. Tiger Woods would've had no problem showing up for those 3 tournaments, but he was not invited to the playoffs. There are PGA tour winners who did not make the top 125 let alone the top 70. Comparing the Master's to the PGA, forget the history, the PGA is a much more impressive win. The Master's is well-known for having the weakest field of all of the majors and the PGA the strongest.

SP got the exact result she wanted. In hindsight, she realizes how unsportspersonlike it was. I've done similarly in the past, tho not in golf. Best for her the US won b/c the apology likely wouldn't have been sufficient without a US win or a euro beat down. As for those blaming someone other than SP, there's only one person apologizing today.

I live in the PHX area. I'd pick a resort and call them. Multiple resorts have multiple courses. Really comes down to budget and how many different courses you'd like to play.

There's no money in this though. The money is in the equipment and greens fees. "Come get golf ready and then go buy $1000 in equipment." My brother just took up the game a couple of months ago. Per my advice, he still hasn't played a round because his swing wouldn't allow it to be enjoyable. He is a very athletic person, but $50 for four hours of struggle is tough to swallow.
