  1. 1. Do you think you can break 100 at Torrey Pines a week before the US Open?

    • Yes, I can definitely break 100 at Torrey Pines
      69
    • No way can I break 100 at Torrey Pines
      80

Tiger stated that no 10 handicap could break 100 at this year's US Open venue. Golf Digest ran a contest of those that felt they would like to try and received an overwhelming response. I usually play well on tough courses so I think I could but maybe I'm just full of it

My question is: do you think you could break 100 at Torrey Pines a week prior to the US Open?

A course out here set up their 18th hole a couple years ago to the US Open's specs as a promo. It was brutal. Par 5 almost 600yds. I lost my approach shot ball in the rough 6ft off the green, rolled my second putt off the green. Took a 9. Best score of my foursome.

Just to be clear. Tiger made that comment about Oakmont and not Torrey Pines.

The only way that can happen is if an amateur plays like a pro. Meaning,

A) He uses enough club.
B) Course Management is his top priority.
C) Realized that the greens are going to be the equivalent of putting on glass.
D) Most important, he or she, sorry ladies, does not crap their pants and is in awe that they are playing at Torrey Pines.

I definitely think a 10 handicap can break 100.

I think I have the game in my bag. My high scores are from being thick-headed and hitting consecutive shots out of bounds/into the woods/into the water, or taking a big risk when it's not worth my while. Also, it's hard to lose a ball when you've got thousands of people watching it (a big advantage tour pro's have over anyone else). I'd shoot better if I used my head - but hey, it's more fun when you give it a ride, and to hell with where it goes.

The only type of course that sees me go to pieces is one that's really tight with impenetrable woods or lots of OB on all sides.

I wouldnt say its more fun when you give it a ride because, like you said, its not fun being in the water our out of bounds or anything like that. The joy of the game to me is taking what you work on out to the course and trying to score the best that I can for that day, not teeing it up and seeing how far I can hit it and having it go in the water or whatever. Playing like that it would be difficult to break 130 out there, plus there is a decent amount of hazards to deal with.

I will predict that the person who is chosen will not break 100.

Playing a US Open course, sight unseen, will be too much to handle on many different levels.

The shear brutality of the course set-up is unreal. It is not uncommon to see professionals score in the mid 80s. If a +4 can be humiliated by such conditions, what chance does a mere mortal stand? The course is long, the rough is thick, and the greens are hard and fast. Again, there will be pros in the 80s that have experience playing tough tracks getting embarrassed.

The pyschological factor is something that most of us have never experienced. Playing with celebs, having cameras, and a rules official will put an unknown stress on any golfer. Just knowing that the hopes of every 10 handicapper are on your back coupled with the excitement of the event will be a tough obstacle. The average person with first tee jitters at their local muni will be puking on their shoes. Good luck trying to get a good night sleep.

The only people that I give a chance to are Sand Trap forum regulars because we are not intimidated easily and would show up and represent. Pick us!

The way I see it...based on the extra yardage that the tips create on each hole...I would say that a 10 handicaper could think of it as 1 over par for each hole and still have some breathing room. True, there will be some holes in which would be parred, but for those that don't, to break 100...I think it is possible.

Now,if my game, which is a more inconsistant than a 10 handicaper, I would take the approach that if I bogey each hole...I would be ok...knowing that there would be opportunities for par...but not too many that I could double bogey. They main variable would be the 1. Rough and 2. Green speed. I can honestly say that I have never putted on championship "fast" greens, so that would be a huge difference.

I certainly would like the shot, but to tell you the truth, it would be tough regardless.

Good point. I never thought about that way.

I am the Opera Singer they are talking about in the first line. I am in preproduction of a video to up my chances of making it in. My plan would be to go for Bogey Golf 90, and hope for a few pars.

Wish me luck!

It would be interesting to know the course rating and slope with the course set up for a U.S. Open.

My guess would be "no way, no how" for me to break 100 and I wouldn't even want to hazard a guess as to what my final score would be.

I know it's not the US Open, and it's not Torrey Pines, but I played Southern Hills the Monday following the PGA Tour Championship and shot a 101 :)

NET or Gross? If I can have the 16.9 strokes from my handicap I might be able to squeak out a 115.

I played the Heathers Course at Boyne in 2006. It was one week before they held a US Amateur qualifier there. The rough was pretty thick and the greens were already rolling fast. We played it as a scramble, but it would have been a tough go on my own ball. That wasn't even from the tournament tees.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
