I keep reading and hearing how far male and female non-professional golfers are hitting their drivers. However, I actually never see this, ever. I've played with guys who claim they hit it 300 yards and don't come within 75 yards of that number. Do people really know how far 270, 280 and 300 yards really is? Does anyone else get annoyed when their playing partners brag about distance they can't reach with a driver AND a pitching wedge?

I've made some posts about this - people are lying. They don't understand that 270 is a BIG drive and is a product of good tempo and weight shift.

I'm almost ready to make an infomercial on how to hit it 300+ every time - the answer is post on online forums. Seems to be a huge correlation. In my 15 years of playing I've played with maybe.... 3 people that can hit it 290+ on average.... I should tell the rest of the guys to start posting more on forums.

nobody i play with brags about their distance. if they did, i would never play with them again. Its actually pretty hard to average 280+ yard drives in the short stuff. I'm only about 5 9 and can usually hit it long than guys way taller than me.

Not really. I hit it 200-210 with my driver and occasionally bomb one past it. If I'm anywhere near the guy who claims to hit it farther, I'll make sarcastic comments to myself about needing to learn math. "Wow, I busted it 270 and still have 150 left to the pin on this 360 yard par-4"

Im an average hitter. I usually measure my distance from the Tee box to the distance markers.

I trust those things because They can't be off. Even if they are it's only by a few yards.

I don't think they are necessarily lying, I think they actually believe they can hit it 300 yards. They do the math right, but they don't take into account the tees playing up, wind at the back, cutting the corner---and on top of that, there "average" is the one drive they actually got a hold of. Take all those factors into account, and a 240 yard drive can easily turn into a "300 yard bomb".

Your definatly right, I think only 2/5 300+ yarders have been Straight shots.

My others I have Cut over water, and a little bit of a fade around trees on a dogleg.

I carry the ball without wind about 270. The only problem is I get maybe 5 yards of roll. I use my range finder off the T-box behind. Even if I have honors I'll let rest of my group tee off, except my brother, he played college baseball and bruises it.

The thing I love most is when someone hits a 250 yard drive on a 500 yard par 5, then waits for the green to clear. That makes sense, the same yardage off the deck with a more lofted club!

I'm 6'4" and have went from 230 back in 97' to 280 in 2008... problem is I'm talking about my weight.

Good news... I do average a legit 250 or so as far as driver distance.

I'd say my average length of cary is about 250-260 if you trust the yardage markers at the range. On the course not so much cause I tend to try too hard, resulting in really bad drives half the time, lol.

If you trust ball launch monitors, I was hitting about 275 with 114 mph club head speed at the golf shop the other night, for whatever that's worth.

That's another thing I don't get about people. If they're on a 550 yard par 5 and their drive only went 250, why are they waiting for the green ahead to clean? They didn't hit their driver 300, what in the world makes them think they're going to hit their 3 wood that far?

It's doubly irritating to me because where they park their cart and wait for their second shot, especially because that's usually within my range and I get to sit there for 15 minutes. And then the top the ball halfway there or slice it into the woods, and have to hit another one.

So true..

I've been behind a guy who waited for greens to clear, then proceeded to slice...he did this every hole, I guess he was waiting for that perfect drive. Which never happened, I laughed to myself all day

So true..

My buddy and I have a running joke on the golf course because "that guy", the one waits for the green to clear, will usually say something like, "I don't know if I can reach, but if I get a hold of it...." right before he shanks it. So on par five's one of us will usually say, "I don't know if I can reach it..."
