  1. 1. Why is Gary Still Playing Masters?

    • He likes taking the slot of a upcoming younger golfer.
      5
    • He's trying to inspire old and new golfers alike.
      23
    • He owns stock in a nipple height pants company and trying to advertise.
      7
    • He has nothing better to do.
      16

I know he's the "ambassador of golf", but does anyone buy that? I'm not sure how a non-competing is that inspiring. Does it inspire anyone else to do anything other than vow never to hike your pants up to your nipples?

C'mon man, you are talking about Gary Player. Guys like him paved the way for people like Tiger,Phil and so on.... I think it is great for the game of golf to see someone his age out there still playing. I would say only 5% of the guys on this site would be lucky to break 100 out there...

To make the records for masters appearances. I think he played great for his age. I mean he's 72 and shot I believe 16 for 2 days which translate into around 80. Seventy-two and shooting 80 at august in its current condition is remarkable imo.

Awesome golfer, I agree. But that slot he occupies is one that could launch a young player's career.

Durable guys in sports are awesome: guys like Farve and Ripkin. But those are guys that come out to win each game. What would people think of Farve if he "started" for another 20 years by playing the first offensive set, then left the game? It cheapens him, and the game. I saw Gary Player play in a Champions tour event, and it was really cool. I know it's a tradition to be able to play in Master's tournaments for life, but I was a little pissed when he said he'd play next year.

I did not realize that he actually took up a spot in the field.

I think he's playing for his fans. I went to the range on Saturday morning and heard several people talking about how great it was to see him play.

Ya it was to make the record for most masters appearances with i beleive 51 or 52 ?

2008 was #51. By playing in it, he broke a record he previously held jointly with Arnold Palmer.

Where is the option on the poll to pick : He earned it with his three wins at the Masters? Did you watch the par 3 on Wednesday? Player, Palmer, and Nicklaus can still swing the club decently enough to stick shots.

Awesome golfer, I agree. But that slot he occupies is one that could launch a young player's career.

What young player would that be? You have to play pretty well to have a chance to get into the Masters, so if you're right on the edge you already have a fairly decent career. If they haven't played well enough to qualify what's to say they deserve the shot. The players who win PGA Tour events get into the Masters, so the so called young player could have got in that way as well. Finally you don't need a Masters win to establish a career. With the amount of money players get from winning, or even contending, and the sponsers padding the pockets Pro players don't need the Masters to make a living.

One of the many benifits of winning at the Masters is the offer to be able to come back and play in the event for life. I'd take advantage! I don't really buy the, "taking up a spot for another player" bit. To get an invite to the Masters is a goal for all those guys on tour, and that invite does not comes easily. The guidelines are clearly set and can be achieved. You just play hard enough to get there.

That being said, I voted for choice 3. I think that should be a option on all polls here from now on.

I think it's a great homage to past champs. And I don't think that he takes another players spot - it's an invitational and they invite as many or few as they like.

I must say it's quite a effort to shoot a 78 at the age of 72 at Augusta.

They may also issue special invitations at their discretion, as they did this year to Prayad Marksaeng from Thailand and Liang Wen-Chong from China and Jeev Milkha Singh from India. I believe that the field included only 94 players. If they wanted to invite more, they could.

If he's not taking anyone's spot, them more power to him. I hope he keeps playing then.

Interestingly enough, when he was younger, he said he'd never be one of those old guys that kept playing when they knew they couldn't win.

I think it was to give ESPN, GOLF Channel and CBS about 40 hours of mindless filler material. It was Gary Player this and Gary Player that everytime you turned on the TV.

The Fred Couples cut record was also overdone.

I doubt he is taking someones spot. Your right the Masters decides how many play and sets the qualifications. But I do feel it is time to let it go when breaking 80 is a good day. I am not offended, and who doesn't enjoy basking for a bit in past glories, well if I had any past glories.
