Well today I went to the local Golf Etc. and decided to check it out. It just opened a few weeks ago and wanted to try out a few clubs since I'm in the market looking for a new set.

So I walk in, there are 2 reps standing at the counter just talking and having a casual conversation about their weekend. I'd say both were between 25-35 years old. They take a glance at me, no "hi's" or "how ya doin?" and return to their conversation.

As I walk around, I'm looking at the putters, then onto the clubs and the guys just walk by me not asking if I need help or anything. Then, 2 men walk in wearing polos and Callaway hats and the workers surprisingly notice them and ask what they needed.

I was wearing khaki shorts and a tshirt, I guess I looked like a golf noob that didn't need help. Oh well, just my rant.

You'll have that. I had that happen when I was looking at used cars. Went in one day with a buddy dressed in shorts and a t-shirt and got no help. Went in a couple days later in khaki pants and a polo shirts and had to carry a club to beat the salesmen off of me.

Sounds like I'd find a new shop to buy my clubs.

I wear khaki shorts and a nice t-shirt when I golf. I find it more comfortable and when I am just with my friends why should a dress up in long hot pants and a stuffy polo? If i was playing at an upscale course or in a tourny or something then I would dress up but otherwise I think it is rediculious that you should dress up to go whack balls around a pepped up field with small holes in it. I just hate stuffy golf snobs with a passion.

Reminds me when I worked at Future Shop circa 2001. Some raggedy old guy came in, greasy hair, oil stains on his clothes, hands weren't clean, etc and nobody was waiting on him. I was just learning my job so I thought I would ask if I could help him. Well, 45 minutes later and $6k in sales, with a nice commission bonus, I had the last laugh :)

Nice. I always wished I'd come across someone like that. Never did but tried my hardest to help everyone I could.

No one wants to earn their paycheck anymore )

This is what happens when you pay people on commission, but can you really blame the salesperson?

If the salesperson spends too much of their time helping small customers not only do they not make any money, but they get to hear from their manager at the end of the day about how they didn't make their quota. As far as earning their paycheck, if they don't make sales, they don't get a paycheck. It's easy to say they should pay just as much attention to the small customer as the large one, until you realize that means earning less money and letting their family go hungry. Spending an hour helping four customers that make $30 purchases does not equal the same commission as spending an hour with a single customer that makes a $500 purchase.

Lol, well I am in fact asian. :p

I don't really care to be honest, it was them who lost business so I'm not losing any sleep over this. It's odd when you work in retail that you mentally take notes of how other stores handle their customers. Like if you worked as a waiter or server, you're extra nice or tip more when you're out to eat because you know how hard it is to wait on people.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

that's just the sad truth that most people in stores will only serve ppl they think have $. I roll into a mall over here called "The Short hills" mall. It's been the #1 in America for years now. i go into stores all the time dressed comfortably..a dry fit sleeveless...at most dressed i'll be in a polo. i don't go looking like a slob...but i rarely go to malls and i want to be comfortable.

I went into a jewelry store...not wearing any of my big bling except for the watch u see on my wrist in my avatar. i'm looking around at the Lladro statues b/c my mom collects. For 30 minutes i'm staring at 1 piece. It's like $800..nothing too crazy... and the ladies keep on ignoring me... passing me up to serve other folk..so i say f*** it walk out.

2 weeks later...same day..same amt of business going thru the store..but this time i'm coming from a tv meeting.. so this time i'm in a button down shirt tucked into some hacker suit pants. i look at it for 2 seconds and they flock to help me. upon asking: can I help you. I simply state
I was interested in purchasing this piece 2 weeks ago, but the staff here neglected to help me after waiting for 30 minutes while being passed upon countless times. It'd be nice if I had gotten the same treatment then as I did just now. I would've saved myself $35 for shipping and handling.

bottom line - society dictates most... and doesn't that suck?

Well today I went to the local Golf Etc. and decided to check it out. It just opened a few weeks ago and wanted to try out a few clubs since I'm in the market looking for a new set.

I own a retail business. The second a customer walks through the door to my store, I want that individual to feel as if he were a genius for making the decision to spend his time and, possibly, his money with my company. If I allow anything less, I am giving my competitor an edge. I don't care what a customer looks or sounds like, they should all be treated with common courtesy, like they are a guest in one's home.

I have walked into the Edwin Watts store in Memphis on several occassions and experienced the same treatment you received in Golf, etc. I have given that store several chances and at this point I would prefer shopping almost anywhere else. Their sales people have been poorly trained or management hired the wrong people. Their sales people don't give a monkey's pucker whether or not I require any assistance. They have no clue what I'm looking for because they don't bother to ask. A really sharp sales person could always ask if one needs tees, a cleaning tool, gloves, balls or just let one know what's on sale. Instead these fellows stand around looking as if they rather be anywhere else and they also look as if they're wondering why they are not going to meet their sales quota for the month. And, for the record, when I'm there, I'm generally wearing a well fitting suit. This sort of behaviour drives me nuts. How can these people take potential customers and their money for granted? There's another store in the Memphis area with sales people similar to the Edwin Watts fellows. However, the new Golfsmith seems to have more informed and well trained people. They will be getting my hard earned dollars! I'm voting with my pocketbook. If these nimrods don't want my money, I resolve not to burden them with it.

I had this happen a time or two. If I absolutely can't find what I am looking for at another store, I will order it online. I worked retail for well over ten years and we never treated customers like that. Matter of fact, when the time came to shut the doors, the customers were the ones that had less than perfect attitudes towards us.

I remember this one customer ripped a bag of dog food in her car and expected us to pay for it(refund). At the time, no refunds were allowed (going out of business) so I offered to pay here out of my own pocket. She took the money from me and told me she hoped I never found another job!

I have had this happen to me plenty of times. I run two gyms so my work atire is t-shirt and gym shorts or a pullover and a pair of nice sweats. Unfortunately I don't have time to change before I go out to run errands. Often times I am shopping in my work atire and get the turned up nose from a lot of people. I had this happen at a local golf shop. When they blew me off, I went to a different place and dropped over $700 on a new set of irons. Oops.

In my line of work we get a lot of tire kickers. They want to pick your brain about exercise and diet then when it comes down to paying for personal training or a membership they will "have to get back to you." Unfortunately you still need to spend the time with each one of them. I have had more than my share that look like there is no chance in Hell they are spending money that turned out to be long time clients.

Part of this is knowing where you're going. We don't live in an ideal world, so if you want the best customer service, you also need to look like the best customer. I've gone shopping at the mall straight from lunches wearing a bespoke suit and gotten great customer service, and I've also gotten little-to-no customer service when I was dressed casually.

I've also walked out on sales staff I didn't like, I walked out of 2 dealerships when I was ready to sign and pay cash on a new truck, and on more than one occasion I've asked to see a manager when I've received both good and bad customer service.

It takes more than simply avoiding the store; you need to notify someone of your dissatisfaction. Whether it's your friends, an internet forum, or a manager, make sure to give some type of feedback on the experience. Word spreads.

Keep track of the people who give you good service. I buy almost all of my clothing from a single store in town (the only thing I don't buy are athletic clothes and T-shirts, which are all fraternity/sorority shirts anyways.) I buy them from one salesman. If he isn't there, I thank the other men there and tell them I'll be back later (at this point, I know them all by face and most by name.) Show loyalty to the people who are helping you, and they will provide excellent service.

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

spoken like a salesperson huh? , had you read his OP he stated that these guys didn't even say Hi, BYe, kiss my ass or anything to him, that right there is bad salesmanship either way you roll it, throw it, call it.....as a salesperson you should always say Hello, or how are you doing? even if you don't want to earn your money

Stack System’s marketing materials inflate apparent swing speed and distance gains through selective presentment of data without qualification that purported gains are not the result, in whole or part, of its training protocol and products. * Yes, I'm joking about abbreviating both "SS." SuperSpeed wants: A judgment that the Stack System has disseminated false and/or misleading information in violation of federal and Illinois law. The deletion of all false advertising distributed and recall of all packaging containing false advertising and a requirement that Stack System issue notices (written or otherwise) to that effect to all current distributors and retailers of its products and all distributors with whom Stack System has done business in the past eighteen months. Written confirmation within 30 days of an injunction detailing the manner and form in which Stack System has complied. An order that Stack System disseminate corrective advertising informing consumers, the trade, and the public of Stack System’s unlawful conduct. 3X all profits received by Stack System as a result of its unlawful actions. 3X all damages sustained by SuperSpeed (as a result of Stack System’s actions) The cost of the action All reasonable attorney fees All other relief to which SuperSpeed are entitled and such other or additional relief as just and proper. Oy.
    • I'm not doing this for the hundred and twentieth time. Sorry in advance, but you get the massively abridged version. Those guys also benefited from the weaker/shallower fields. Also, Watson's career doesn't overlap with Jack's like many think it did. Tom is nearly a decade younger. Jack won only like four majors only after Tom won his first. And Tom won more British Opens than he did all three of the other majors combined, as it was his specialty (not Jack's). Arnie's career similarly doesn't overlap Jack's as much as many think.   Jack would also tell you Tiger was the better golfer.
    • Weaker depth of fields for sure. Some of the top level guys with Jack were pretty awesome. Tom Watson had the lead on the 72nd hole of the 2009 British Open, an event where Tiger missed the cut. Old Tom was almost 60 years old. Jack himself at age 58 finished Top 10 at The 1998 Masters and scored better than Tiger, who won The Masters by 12 shots just a year before that.   The success of both Tom & Jack in older age gives some hope that maybe Tiger can find the magic again at some point. He’s still trying to figure out how to build the stamina for 72 holes after the leg injury. I would love to see him jump on the leaderboard in the coming years. I know a lot of people have given up on him at this point, but that was also true from 2014 to 2017 with the back injuries. He had a hell of a resurgence in 2018 & 2019. Would be fun to see it again.
    • Perceptive rules question by caddie unlocks Tour pro’s ‘dead zone’ relief A perceptive rules question by Xander Schauffele’s caddie, Austin Kaiser, unlocked “dead zone” relief during the Wells Fargo Championship.
    • I ran across an interesting new clip, Johnson Wagner went into that spot with the Referee who allowed the relief.  Apparently there was a perfectly reasonable shot to be made, as Johnson clearly demonstrated, so relief from the TIO was perfectly appropriate.
