The other day I had the privilege of playing golf on a public course in Westchester County, NY with a NYPD Hero Cop.. I was playing with a retired Police Officer that had multiple gold stars, multiple good shootings and a host of pickup robberies that ended with arrests and honorable mentions during the 1980's/1990's.) (not to mention 9/11 service.)

We were playing the 5th hole when the ranger sounded the thunder alarm. It is custom that when the horn sounds if you only played 7 or less holes you can get a rain check. Not that day. (Tough economy I guess).

The course manager denied the rain check for every one that approached him. His statement: if its raining in 30 minutes come back. We did, and were denied. Sure the manger didn't know he was a hero cop. But still... Even if he was Joe Shmoe; he made the course rule:rain checks for every proper request.
During the rain delay that lasted almost 1.5 hours we drained a few beers and talked golf. The Retired cop was interested in playing again if the sun broke but the weather was far from clear.
The course manager- resplendent with the obligatory cigar in the mouth denied everyone multiple times.

I thought that was obtuse and uncalled for. When you pay to play if conditions persist for an hour at least you should be afforded the chance to play again.

I will reconsider playing that course as often as I had before.

Obviously, being a retired cop is great and all, and especially with the resume he had, but I don't understand the point to the story...why should he get a rain check and anyone else? It's only golf...I think everyone should have got the rain check to be honest.

while I don't agree with him, at least the Manager wasn't being partial toward anyone, as CG031 stated being a hero is great and all, but to what degree should that afford him? should he have been the only person allowed back on the course? I don't think so

Ditto.

And perhaps if it was going to rain, you might have checked the rain check policy beforehand? You only said "it was custom" but not if that's an actual rule or not.

Well, I agree with the OP. You pay good money to play golf, and you are having a good time but the weather isn't cooperating. Just a general sense of morality would say that you give the guys a rain check and let them come back. And give it to Everyone, but especially someone who gave a significant portion of his life to service of the community and protecting its people.

I'd buy him a drink.

Odd...I played twice this past weekend in the Bronx (once on Friday afternoon and once on Sunday afternoon). Both absolutely spectacular days weather-wise (maybe a bit on the hot/humid side)...I guess the storm just passed over the Bronx?

But yeah - at least the guy in the clubhouse wasn't being partial...did he even know he was a 'hero cop'? To be honest, I can't pick one out from a crowd...unless he's John McClane.

your correct, but as the OP stated, the Manager wasn't aware of this person being whom he was and even if he were aware of it, should he have been given better treatment over anyone else? I mean there could have been Fireman, Doctors, Teachers etc.... and such alike also in the clubhouse when all this happened......

yeah...I completely agree. the mgmt can't be partial.
I played with Governor Brenden Byrne the other week. They didn't give him a 9 hole rate, and, the course we played at is named after his brother!
He had to make a tee time, wait when he got there, and pay just like everyone else.

You are right- this weekend had great weather in the tri state area! The actual rain check incident happened several weeks ago. I didn't pull the trigger on this post until a few weeks after. I often delay posting a rant incident in order to mull the word choice. However If I ever hit a hole in 1, I will post about right then and there.

I agree. The manager should have followed the course rules; given the rain check to everyone that asked. There is no way the manager could have known the identity of the cop (just a random golfer on a random course), however the manager went against the course policy on rain checks, and he went against his word 30minutes later.
