If you only had $60 to spend on golf a month...

...how would you spend it? Wife and I are going through some tight financial straits the next couple months and it looks like I won't have a lot of money to spend on golf. It may be more (or less) than $60...I just picked that number as an example.

I usually spend between $18-25 to play 9 holes. Ideally, I like play 9 holes a week and take at least one trip to the driving range. If I spend $20 at Top Golf (driving range), it buys $25 worth of game credits, which I could stretch for an entire month. So that would leave $40 for greens fees, which I would probably split up into 2 rounds of 9 holes...I might be able to do 3 if I start walking and/or playing cheaper courses, even though I want to start playing at nicer/more expensive courses right now

But it got me to thinking...if your golf budget was drastically reduced, would you try to play as much as possible at cheaper courses, or would you play less often and play more expensive courses?

As much as possible at cheaper courses, without a doubt. Keep playing, that's the name of the game.

I'd definitely walk, it's good for you. I also like cheaper courses. My favorite is $8 for 9 holes. I'll take more cheap golf over less fancy golf any day.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of gas to get to the course and the range. I try to play the course down the street rather than the one 10 miles away because it saves a gallon of gas.

Earlybird. Twilight. Weekdays. Internet specials. If you have the time available ask some of the courses you play if they are willing to trade some of your time for a round or two. You probably will end up doing some unglamorous work but if the tradeoff at the end is free golf it might be worth looking into.

I think its selfish that you even consider playing golf when your money is really tight.

i really hope you don't have kids, but i feel so bad for your wife and how inconsiderate you really are.

Save your money, their is more important things in life, like having a roof over your heads, food, transportation, saving for a rainy day.

If you don't want a divorce, i would really consider using your funds more wisely.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Rick... i think you did a good job of NOT answering the question, and instead you hopped on the JUDGEMENT train.

i would play a lot at cheaper courses if i were you :)

also rick, i think the 60$ a month only factors in after (taking care of kids, rent, savings, etc.) think a little before you go judging people based on what they wrote in 40 words. and Rick where do you get off on calling him selfish?

Rick you have never met him never talked to him so please get the hell off your high horse and quit judging people.

This is the second time I've said this on this board in the last couple of hours: all I can say to that post by Rick is - WOW.

You really could have gotten your point across without being so frank.

As for the money - yes, you do have a point ("Maybe you should focus on your family, then golf," would have gotten it across, but nonetheless), but at the same time being able to escape family troubles for a couple of hours on the golf course every week or two can make a big difference.

yeah i agree tiger there is definetly a thin line between being extremely rude and judgemental and being helpful.

although in certain circumstances some people will not just cross the line but will blow it up with a grenade on their way over -.-

Thats a bit rough. It seems a couple of others have beaten me to it as well.

Settle down Rick, what you will probably find is that the $60 is the op's "sanity" money. This is money that you have left over in your budget each month to spend on yourself. His wife probably spends her $60 per month on something for herself as well. As for me, my membership costs $46 per month. This gives full playing rights any day, anytime. Don't need to book a tee time (except Sunday Morning inbetween 7 and 9:30) as the course is never that busy. No starters, no rangers, no attitudes and no carts... You gotta like New Zealand! I'm not sure I could handle the hoards of people on the courses in the USA. I plan to come and see sometime though! Oops bit off topic there, but I would just play as much as gas allows to get there and back!

In case you need a third person to tell you how out of line your post was, Rick, I got you, man. I'm not quite sure where you get off judging someone like that on an internet forum.

Maybe you should set aside $60 a month and spend it on manners classes.[/sarcasm]

Lowest membership fees at a couple of the local full size courses very close to me are $550/year unlimited play so I would walk and the remaining $14 would probably go for balls. I would pass on the range time.

I really feel sorry for you people in the USA. In Australia (well atleast where I live) I pay $60 a year (Junior Rates) ($600 for Adults) and I can go on the course for free and day any time. And that is the best course in my area, it get's cheaper in the worse areas.

It sounds like you are riding when you go, stop that. Walking is healthy, and for me it I like to be able to think a little in between shots. It sounds like you play 9 mostly. I don't care how out of shape you are, you should be able to walk 9.

Around here, twighlight and weekday rates are cheaper. If I Played twilight during the week I could probably get in one round of 18 a week in.

I think I'll jump on the "rick bashing" train. Judging a guy from a simple question on a golf forum? Please.

Anyway, understanding that our fine golfer has met all his spousal and parenthood responsibilities and is able to budget some recreation money (like most of us try to do), I commend him on trying to stretch his disposable income.

I am definately of the "Play more, pay less" school of thought. An inexpensive course can be just as fun as any super-manicured tract. Maybe play the cheapies until the end of the season and use that one time to play a beauty befoer putting the clubs away for winter.

Here is another vote for cheaper, more often.

But definetly checkout the internet specials. There is a $75 course that I play for under $20 regularly using LMG.

I'd play 3X a month with my 9 year old son. After 4PM on weekends at a pretty decent local course it's 20 bucks for an adult with a junior for all you can play. We have a blast playing together and it's a joy to watch his expression when he hits a good shot!

You can talk to a slice, but a hook doesn't listen.
