Hey all,

I was wondering if it was out of the ordinary to not carry a 3 wood.

I play 1, 5 and 3-pw,lw,sw

I can get my driver up to 315 and hit my 5 about 260 so anything 575 and under is reach in two territory. Is thereany plus to having the 3 in there? besides long par 5's and more control off the tee?

It's all personal preference really. If you don't think you are really missing any distance than there's no reason why it would be necessary. Like you said long par 5's and control off the tee are the advantages. Also if you play unfamiliar courses a lot it could be good to have more options in the bag.

You hit your 5 wood 260 consistently? I'm not saying it can't be done but I play with some monsters and a 260 yd 5 wood is definitely not the norm. But to answer your question I'd say yes, especially since you have room in the bag for one. Then you have a 300 yd club in the bag for those 615 yd par 5's.

I call bs on your distances. But let's pretend you can hit it that far. No, you don't need a 3 wood then.

I just went to a Driver and 4 Wood set-up. I am not giving up too many yards with the 4 wood and I could control it better than the 3 wood that I demoed. I think that your set-up is fine.

I've been using this same combination for years. In fact, when I was playing the best golf of my life (before the kids were born

) I actually dropped the 4 wood altogether and simply carried a Driver and 2 iron. This setup forced to me to check my ego a bit on the par 5's. I started to play smarter and didn't push the issue as often. This resulted in better scores for me since "playing smarter" was always one of my downfalls. I just wish that I would have learned this discipline earlier. I don't see anything wrong would carrying a Driver, 5 wood and dropping the 3 wood. In fact, if you feel that you need that 3 wood from time to time, I'd actually encourage you took look at going with a Driver, 4 wood setup instead of adding a 3 wood to your bag. I think that you'll find that combo to be very versatile.

With your length I wouldn't worry a bit about it.

I'll be replacing my old 3 wood soon and will be going with a PING G10 4 Wood and most likely hit it further than I would the 3 wood.

first off, calling bs on distance doesn't answer my question.

second, im a big boy with a long swing.

third, the reason im asking this question I was hoping to find some shots to give me the excuse to pay the $200 for a TM burner in my bag. And I was wondering if there is a few shots that I can't think of that would require a 3 wood rather than a 1 or a 5.

i.e., I was thinking maybe if I had to play a strong fade from 250+ out, but that comes out every few rounds, and it doesn't warrant a big purchase.

I used to carry both 3 wood and 5 wood. But when I found out that I can hit my 3 wood fairly well, I did not see the use of a 5 wood. So I guess it's all about preference. What ever feels right to you, just do it!

you don't an excuse to get a 3 wood, if it makes you enjoy the game more then go for it! Then you have more options to consider when playing different courses. Dare I syggest you also demo the G10 3W? You'll find its a great club!

Enjoy the game!

I think that quite a few studies have shown that off the deck, most golfers actually hit their 5 wood as well as or better than their 3 wood, due to the higher loft and slightly shorter shaft. I usually use my 5 wood off the deck, and the other club I have (16* 3/4 wood) is rarely used.

I might suggest that, especially with your distances, use that 5W off the deck, and buy a lower lofted 3 wood with a bit shorter shaft but a larger head, and use it for controlled tee shots on those tight holes. Your 5 wood off the deck yardage would seem to be sufficient for just about any hole you will normally encounter.

No way I would even consider a 3 wood with your length, no way at all. If you want to bring your scores down to single digit or scratch, add wedges and work on the short game. Sounds like your power game is totally under control.

first off, calling bs on distance doesn't answer my question.

I don't buy it. If you're an 11 handicap and you can consistently hit the ball that far (and in play) then your short game must be ABSOLUTELY terrible.

315 average with driver and 260 average with 5 wood? If you mean... "When I play a downhill hole 575 yard par 5 with gale force winds at my back and absolutely nut 2 shots, I can reach the green in 2." Then I might believe you. It's stupid to post your absolute maxed out gravity & wind-aided yardages on an internet forum. Get real. I'm going to pretend your first post said: "I hit my driver on average about 290 and my 5-wood on average about 240.. do you think I need a 3-wood?" To which I will respond "Damn you kill the ball. If you're a strong fairway wood player and a 3-wood is more accurate/reliable for you than a driver then I say get one for iffy tee shots where you can still get it out there 255-265 (just guesstimating here) or if your driver is misbehaving and you have the space for it." I will take my words back if you have gotten on a trackman and averaged those distances or you've kept an accurate track of your distances with something as accurate as a gps unit or something.

With your driver distance you should also be able to pitch the rest of the clubs in your bag except for a couple of wedges for the par 3's and the putter. Might as well lighten the load.

If you really hit your 5 wood 260 then more power to you! But, it's hard to believe. If that is the case, there is no point for you to carry a 3 wood IMO.

I am sort of in the same situation. I only hit my driver around 285 consistently but about two rounds ago, I crushed my 5 wood off the tee: 287 on the first hole (Obviously it wasn't a completely 'proper' shot. It was hugging the trees like mad and power drawing, then it must have got a good bounce off a small slope surrounding the forest (no pics on the scorecard right?)). I took a picture of my 287 I was so proud of it :). But anyways...I've recently been trying to find a 3 wood that I can hit farther than my 5 wood with no luck. The one 3 wood that 'feels' longer (the range I was hitting at was only 245ishyds then it just goes into bush) but I haven't seen it go farther yet. In my opinion it would be nice to have the 260 - 275ish range off the tee between a normal 5 wood (245-255ish) and my driver, but obiously if you're hitting it that far it's just a waste of money. I've given up on my search.
