My First Post, Ahh!! Hi there all, I have been lurking on the board since I started playing this past July and I have really gotten hooked on the game. I am at a crossroad right now. My brother in law fixed me up with the best set of golf clubs a beginner could want. He gave me a 3-PW set of Tommy Armour 845's along with the Tommy Armour Black Leather Tour Bag to match. Oh!! did I mention that they were FREE!! Like I said, best beginner set you could ask for. I searched high and low for a putter and tried probably a hundred of them at Golfsmith. I ended up with an Odyssey SRT-2 2-ball putter. I am still using two borrowed hybrids one 19* and one 22*. Oh my irons also came with a fairly used Vokey 56* Wedge. I dont currently own a driver. I took one lesson with a pro after reading a bunch of articles and I have only played 5 rounds of 18 holes where I kept score on my own, the other times have been scrambles and 9 hole rounds. But I listed all of my scores on Golflink and it rated my handicap to be a 34. I was glad that it wasn't maxed out at the 36. So my dilema is this. I have realized how important the short game is and I was wanting a decent set of wedges GW SW and LW. I had my eye on the Adams Tom Watson 3 pack of wedges , but then I saw some other ones by Maltby , and some others by Hireko Golf. I tried to post links to each, but since its my first post. The Maltby's come in a pak and you have to build them, but the price looks good. I am trying to stay under 100 bucks for the three wedges, if you had to buy three wedges, which one would you recommend and why? Thanking you in advance for any input.......

Titleist vokeys are a bit more expensive, but well worth it I think. Great for many types of shots. Can't go wrong with clevelands either. Also, the new Srixon wedges that have the faces that look like the vokey spin milled are also really nice. Wedges all look pretty similar so find a finish that appeals to your eye on a wedge that has a good feel and you will be on your way.

if you are new to the game its more important to add a wedge to your bag to learn how to use them and the benefits of filling gaps in your bag. in time you'll learn the advantages of a forged wedge, varying groove designs, sole grinds, bounce settings etc etc etc but for now focus on getting those clubs in your bag.

if money is an issue the adams set is the way to go IMHO

you can't beat that deal for a NEW set of wegdes

Ditto. But if you went with ONE wedge in the $100 range go with the new/old stock Vokey SM56/14 IMHO.

I wouldn't worry about the lob wedge right away. You should be able to get 2 very nice used wedges (cleveland for example) for $100. A gap wedge (51-54*) with a low bounce and a SW (56-58*) with a higher bounce should cover it. I don't play a lob wedge and haven't missed it. I can open up my 56* to play flop shots. Look for gently used quality wedges with lots of bite left in the grooves and practice with them until they need to be replaced. The Taylor made RAC TP wedges are very nice. I like the finish and the amount of spin I get with them.

Thanks for the replies, but I wanted to point out one thing, the three different manufacturers I mentioned all have the three wedges for under one hundred dollars. I did notice that the Maltby ones from Golfworks were spin milled faces. Isn't that what the big deal with the Vokey's is?

Adams 3 pak 79.99

Maltby Milled Wedges 3 pak 59.97

http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp...2_A_cn_E_10015

Hireko Golf wedges 3 pak 74.99

http://www.hirekogolf.com/hireko/ord...0/73/0/0/0/0/0

All would include 52* 56* and 60* wedges

as my dad used to tell me, you get what you pay for. I'd suggest getting a 54 and 58 degree used wedges in a higher quality (Titleist, Ping or Taylor MAde) as opposed to geting the cheaper ones.

Make sure you hit them and get a good feel for them, as they are your "feel" clubs.

Good luck!

You already have a good 56, so why not just get a 52 and a 60 instead of a set of 3? You could probably get both used for around $100. For example: http://www.3balls.com/sitesearch/sea...Brand=Titleist .

In myBagBoy Revolver: HiBore XL 10.5° ⢠HiBore 3W ⢠Halo 2i, 3i & 4i
MX900 5-PW ⢠MP-R 52-07° & 58-10° ⢠Studio Select Squareback 1

Carl Spackler: This is a hybrid. This is a cross of Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff...

I think you should probably just buy the adams, because most people with handicaps over 20 scoop the ball wich means that you really wouldnt bennifit that much from a spin milled wedge.

Or you can go with a high-quality clones. I just got the Titelist Vokey Oil Can CLone from this place, SW. Absolutely amazing wedge, no difference between the clone and the name brand. 120 dollars for a 52, 56, and 60. You can't beat this, these are amazing clubs and go ahead and talk to the online assistance as well, they can't point you in the right direction. I recomend this website 100%.

It actually probably is no were close to the real thing, how can a company produce a product using some of the highest quality spin milling process out there and still make a profit for $36 it just isn't logical.

Better Golf. Better Price. Here's how:

Since we buy direct from the foundries and suppliers, we cut out the middleman-and the markup. Shop and compare. There are a lot of golf companies on the web that offer the same products as Diamond Tour Golf, but keep in mind that we are supplying them. If you have a problem or a question wouldn’t you rather deal with the company that brings them in directly? With the money you'll save over traditional retail, you can pay for your greens fees all season long.

Lower Prices do not mean lower quality

We use the same foundries and suppliers as many major golf companies. Using the same foundries and suppliers means the same high quality materials and technologies can also be built into your assembled clubs. Remember-the pros aren't playing their clubs off the rack, why should you?

Support you can really rely on

Helpful assistance is only a click or a phone call away. Because we employ golf professionals, we won't route you through a call center. When you call or email Diamond Tour Golf, you will have access to a staff of highly trained golf professionals that truly understand golf equipment.

Service you can rely on

We have a warranty that shines like a diamond. All Diamond Tour merchandise is covered by a lifetime warranty against breakage under normal playing conditions. Normal wear from play is not covered.

Know how it worksis before you bash it.

Excellent advice. I had a great RAC TP 56* that I left on the course and never got it back.

Boy, do I miss that wedge. I've subsituted the Maltby 56* and it's been a struggle. I carry a 60* RAC... but, I'm not comfortable with it. I'm a pitch/bump and run guy and feel better with a 8-iron in my hands than a lob; or, with the open 56*. I'll be replacing my wedges this winter... I've just started looking at good used equipment. Good luck!

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
