I'm looking for a club that I can easily hit a low stinger with so I figured a 1 iron would be best.

Anybody ever tried to hit one?

Golf is a game in which the ball always lies poorly and the player always lies well.

Oh my... the 1 iron used to be a very valuable weapon, but unless you can flush one and hit it high when needed (which means club head speed under control) then maybe a strong hybrid or three wood would be a lot easier. I gave up my 1 iron 12 years ago, and like you, I sometimes think I need one -- but to tell the truth, I think I hit more bad shots with the 1 iron than any club in the bag. Now I choke up a 3 wood and hit low punches that way. Try it next time on the range.

It's weird, I don't like hitting hybrids or a 3 wood. I'm not any more accurate with those than with my driver.

I'm a very good iron player though and club head speed is not an issue for me. I'm just looking for a club with an extremely low, piercing ball flight.

I've hit a one iron and used to hit a 2-iron off the tee on tight holes all the time. Off the tee, they're not too bad. But, if you miss it, it won't go far, which can be a good thing.

I seem to recall Trevino topping a 1-iron off the first tee in the U.S. Open one year. . . . prompting him to later joke "If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron." Maybe a grain of truth in that . . .

When would you really use a 1-iron, except off the tee?

I have a ping eye 2 becu 1 iron but have not tried to hit it for at least 10 years. If I need to hit a stinger I hit my driver and hit a punch shot, its alot easier to hit than the 1 irons.

low piercing ball flight. Check out the Sonartec line of clubs. Well known for this flight pattern. Sonartec is out of business, but made the best fairway woods of the early oughts (00's) I have the 15 degree SS-01 and love it. I find that it is best to sweep the ball with this club. It is a very sexy ball flight (picture a golf ball shot out of a tank cannon aimed at 25 degrees above parallel)

My second set of irons....around 1996 or so....were Callaway Big Bertha S2H2 irons. I later on picked up a 2 iron for the set. As an early golfer I simply struggled with the woods and longer clubs. The 2 iron gave me a sevicable tee shot on par 4's and 5's, although I could do little with it unless teed up. Playing on really windy days usually found my drives fairly close to the guys hitting drivers and 3 woods.

I could see the advantages. I noticed just recently that Mizuno markets a series of long irons for this very purpose.

I guess the real question is deciding which of your 14 clubs do you "give up" in order to make room for the 1-iron.

Lee Trevino used to say that if he got caught out in a thunder and lightening storm he's just hold his one iron over his head, because "even God can't hit a one iron......"!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I simply do not see the value in removing any club in my bag to put in a 1 iron. Get you a 2 iron and when you need to hit a low shot simply hood the club for it. This is what I do when I am faced with the need to hit a low shot.

I carried a 1-iron for years and I used to love it for windy days because the ball didnt go that high.
If it were me, I think Id learn how to hit a low stinger before I wasted a spot in my bag for a club I only use every once in a while.
If you dont have a fairly fast swing, a 1-iron isnt for you. Due to the fact that a 1-iron has little loft and doesnt put much weight behind the ball; you need to really be crushing the ball in order to get much distance out of it.
Back when I was in my late teens and swung as hard as I could (and often hit wild, wayward shots), I loved the 1-iron and it worked for me but now that I have a slower, more controlled swing, I no longer carry a 1-iron.
1-irons can be found on Ebay pretty cheap though. Last year I bought a Titleist DCI Black 1-iron for $20 and it was like brand new.

Sometimes I bring my dads old one iron out to play just to mess around with. I found that it can go a good distance for me with a fade because it gives it that extra height. It is nearly impossoble to hit because the ball is higher than the face of the club.

Yes those old 1-rons could be sanded down and make pretty good razors, if you needed to shave in order to look good at the trophy presentation. Otherwise they were very good at putting you in the right rough, especially if your normal shot was a draw.

I had a one iron . . . I couldn't hit the floor with it if I dropped it . . . intimidating sucker, though.

i personally dont like hybrid clubs, i feel that unlike with irons you cannot really hit them to a spot on the fairway, they just go somewhere over there! I find the 1 iron gives may WAY more control than these hybrids which imo are nothing more than old fashioned fairway woods made with modern materials.

Give me 1 iron everytime for accuracy, the ability to hit more controlled and a wider variety of shots.

Can hit the 1 iron about 15feet of the ground - its a great shot to have in the wind, cant do it with a hybrid with any control.
