Yesterday morning my phone rang. It was one of my golf buddies, he said "it looks pretty nice out and the course is open, waddya think?"

He knows I'm an addict and what the answer would be.

15 minutes later, when I left the house, the sun was out, the winds were calm, the clubs were rattling in the hatch, life was good. Even though my dashboard thermometer never rose any higher than 34, I was optimistic. The sun was beaming after all, it would be getting warmer each hole.

Through the miracle of cellular technology, by the time I arrived at the course we had our usual foursome assembled.

All the "usual" bets were in place, the skins, greenies, nassaus, and a game we call "dots".

Surprisingly, the course was wide open, I knew we could knock this round out in under 3 hours.

By the third hole, the clouds appeared, the winds picked up, the noses started to run. The dashboard temperature of 34 was obviously the days high temperature. On the 13th teebox, it was like playing in a well shaken snowglobe. Dayum, it was cold! I "missed" a six iron, my hand is still stinging.

By the time we putted out on 18, the temperature had to be in the mid 20's. I'll betcha the "windchill" was in the teens. It took a 30 minute shower and a roaring fire to finally get thawed out.

After all was said and done, I played pretty well. I even chipped one in for birdie on 17 that won most of the money!

Cold as it was, I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I can't wait for spring!

Any other cold weather nuts out there?

I grew up in Florida. I used to have a 60*/90* rule. I wouldn't play above or below those numbers. Now for hot weather, I have no limit. For cold it depends on the sun. I'd say 40* is minimum if the sun is shining.

My limit is somewhere around 35-38 for most conditions. If the weather is good (little wind, sun out) I'll play down to around 28-30 degrees but that's not normal. I have learned to dress well for the cold so I'm usually pretty comfortable in mid-30's.

Coldest I ever played was a 4 man scramble a few years ago. The temperature was about 15* when we started and reached a balmy 24* by the time we were done. Fortunately the wind was not blowing. The greens were so frozen that most of our approaches bounced several feet in the air when they hit the green. We finished second despite our best player being about a 15 handicap (me at the time). Of course, only 4 groups (out of 17) finished that day because most teams quit.

Anything above 32 w/ sun to tee off on #1......from there unless there's lightning we finish! I had a round last Dec we started @ about 37 and by #12 is was about 29 w/ sleet/snow. Man was THAT fun!
I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

Earlier this year me and my sister decided to get one more round in before the season was over. IT was around 30* and snowing lightly. No sun. A ton of wind. That was just too cold

I am good down to the mid-20's with little or no wind and some sunshine.

I have started a few rounds in the mid-20's with no wind then it got gusty 15-25mph wind or so and that made it fairly unplesant.

There is no such thing as, "too cold". As long as the course is still open, I would play.

I'm a cold weather wimp. Without a wind I'll golf between the mid 50's to the mid 60's on the cool side. On the hot side I don't have a limit.

Mr3putt.....sounds like you had fun with your buddies. That is great, regardless of the temps.

I've only had a couple of really "cold" rounds played this year. The local climate is fairly decent right now....I suspect maybe only a handful of cool/cold rounds left in 2009 before things start getting Masters green.

Then we get the dreaded heat to condend with...hate that stuff.

I'm a wimpy southern boy. I don't like it below 50. But I will start a round in the 40's if I know it's suppose to warm up.

qft!

It was mid-40's & windy here today, and I opted not to go to the range for some practice, and right now, I'm jazzed for wanting to practice (grooving the lessons). so yeah, wimpy.

In college, I played in just about everything and at a wide range of mercury. The worst was a snowstorm that not only was hard to see in but walk as well.

Now, after moving down to the Carolinas for 11+ years, I don't like to play in anything under 45 degrees. The weather is too good down here and normally you'll get at least one or two days in the 50's no matter the month during winter.

Moving down here from Pennsylvania was the best decision I've ever made.

Fairways and Greens.

The only way I don't play because of cold is if I can't physically swing a golf club because of all the cold gear I have to wear.
