I'd love to hear your experiences with the square backed drivers and fairway woods.

I just added a square backed hybrid and have to wonder if the same benefits will / would hold true for the woods and driver.....

I'd heard that the square feature was forgiving but robbed distance....don't have a clue whether or not this claim is true.

I used the Nike Sumo2 5900 all of last year and thoiught it was awesome. I didn't see much distance losss, maybe 1-2%, and certainly didn't get tired of playing from the fairway all the time.

Any loss of distance is minor and pales in comparison to the times when you think you hit a big hook or slice and the ball instead straightens itself out (somewhat) and ends up in the light rough instead of deep rough.

The only drawback is that you can't draw or fade the ball on demand.

I switch drivers every year for variety sake and have my eyes on a Ping Rapture V2. But, for the first time, I am actually a bit hesitant because of the success I had with the square driver.

Ball: Bridgestone B330-RX and Srixon Z-Star

I used a Callaway FTi for most of one season, 2 years ago. I dumped it that fall. I didn't find that it made a bit of difference in accuracy, but I did lose about 10-15 yards in average distance. My Mizuno MX-560 is just as straight, a bit longer, and doesn't look like a toaster on a stick...

I have several friends who use square drivers and FW woods, some brand name, some knockoffs. They mostly seem to like them, but I think it's more a mental thing. I don't think that the actual physical differences in clubhead shape help as much as the press would have you believe. Like any club, if it feels good and fits your swing, then it's going to work for you regardless of the shape of the head.

im using an FT-i and a Nickent 5DX hybrid, both of which are "squarish" clubs and i am SOLD on their accuracy. i think the talk about loasing distance with square headed clubs is hogwash as i am always with or beyond the people i play with in terms of length(and i play with good players including a club pro). these clubs are long, forgiving, and STRAIGHT. i would upgrade to the FT-iQ but ive been hitting roughly 70% of the fairways lately so there is really no need to do so just yet. its true they are a LITTLE more difficult to draw and cut, but thats fine with me. i will take long and straight anyday

I played the FT-i all of 2007 and part of last year and found it to be very straight without any distance loss over the FT-3 it replaced. However, I traded it after my home course began selling Adams clubs for a Adams a3 XTD Insight which is also a square head and found it to be just as good if not better and $200 cheaper.
I would love to give the new FT-iq a go, but not at $500. I'll wait and see if they come down in price given the current state of the economy. If not, the Adams will remain in the bag.

I've tried a couple of different hybrids, two of the clubs having a square head. There was no doubt which club I found it easiest to swing with. The ones with a square almost swung themselves, I was simply there for support. It's quite amazing how large the difference was.

I've never tried a square driver, but can understand that they are harder to shape the shots with. Adjusting the clubface at adress will probably make out a weird swing with a square clubhead, the best way to shape a shot with those are probably to provoke an inside to outside swing or other way around.

It'll be interesting to watch the equipment the coming years to see if square heads will become popular. Good players with a solid swing may not prefer them because of slightly less workability. The players that really get an advantage with square heads are mid to high handicappers like me. I've got two square head hybrids, but that's all. I play my driver pretty solid, also the 3 wood. That's why I went with hybrids to replace the longer irons which I struggle with.

I use a nike 5300 square sasquatch. You cannot work the ball much with a square backed driver as a normal driver.

I have a 3 and 5 wood in the FW and have had great success with them. They are a Nike knockoff and built the entire club for under $30. I don't know if I lost any distance, but had the confidence to know that it would go straight every time with a decent swing put on the ball.

Try one out, they have so many cheap knockoffs that you can experiment for yourself.

I had the Sumo SQ2 5900 for a long time and recently got out of one and into a 907D2. When I had the Sumo, it lived up to it's billing as a fairway finder. At that time, I wasn't interested in working the ball, I just wanted the thing in the fairway. In the past year, I've gotten lessons and focused on practicing a lot and the 907D2 doesn't give me any more length than the Sumo, but the confidence I got from the Sumo carried into the 907D2. My carry distance, according to the launch monitor in the academy, says I average about 266 carry distance on the 907D2. I never got on the monitor for the Sumo but I'd say they were the same. Good luck!
