I am starting to slowly build a better set. I was thinking of going with a Driver, 3W, 2hybrid, 4 hybrid, 5-PW, 50, 56, 60. My concern is that I don't know that I use my 4i that much now. I just know that sometimes on the range I don't hit it well every time. 6/10 times are good. My question is would it be worth the extra money for a 4 hybrid or just stick with a 4i? I hear that they are easier to hit but I can only think of useing a 4 on a par 5 lay up but I can do that with an iron. Are they better to hit and does it have any better playability from say the rough? In a fellow golfers opinion would it be good to get a 4hybrid insted of 4i with only a 60% good hit rate on the 4i, or would it be better to work with the 4i and just try to get up in the 80% range?

I'm so new to this that I am probly the wrong person to take advice from. I just got the 4H XLS in my sig and I LOVE IT. I can smack it about 170 with range balls and it goes straight everytime. I plan on getting a mathing 1H to fill the gap. I just can't hit a wood off the deck to save my life. Of course test some out and see what you think.

In my bag are

Hibore XLS 22* 3i Hybrid

I would go for the 4 hybrid. your going to be able to usually hit out of the rough and it will be easier than a 4 iron. But you will probably want to demo some first before you decide on one. I like to use a 4 hybrid off the tee on shorter holes and really long par 3's.
Good luck on the choice.

When you say 6/10 times are good, what's that mean? Are the other 4/10 terrible: shanks, thin/fat, sliced, etc? Or are they just not good? If they are just not good, then I think you could be alright with a 4 iron. If you like hybrids, though, then a 4h might be better. I can hit a 4i, so I play it instead of a 4h. It's just a personal choice that you've got to make.

As for playability, I think it's easier to hit a ball from deeper rough with an iron. From shorter rough, I like a hybrid. (It's probably in my head.) For me though, I can play either, but with slightly more distance lost with an iron. I think you may end up needing a 4i, so if I were you I'd practice with it. If it doesn't fit your game or the courses you play, then I wouldn't play it. Play and practice with what fits your game right now or in the very near future.

My 4 hybrid is my current favorite club.....and I prided myself on being fairly decent with my long irons.

It's just too easy and versatile.

I get caught on my home course trying to cut corners off the tee on the 4s and 5s...basically playing for the shorter distanced approach.....this lands me too often in fairway bunker trouble.

This 4hybrid is a real gem in those situations. It will also get me out of jams from hardpan lies, too.

The only thing that I miss about my 4 iron is the ability to knock it down low for those windy day shots.

I had the same bag. But when I ordered my VR Irons, I ordered without the 4 iron. I love the hybrid for the variety of shots, it will stop on a dime, out of the rough, other trouble, etc. But the biggest thing for me was the confidence I have with the 4h, so much I ditched the 5 wood and went with the same degree of loft with the 3h.

It's a no brainer to me..... 4 hybrid all the way....

I have a 3 and 4 hybrid w/ three degrees of loft difference in them......

anything from 190-230 out, those two clubs are covering it.....

(depending on conditions of course)

my 4-iron is my trouble club...
need a low hook from out of the trees... 4 iron
need a low slice that stays under that tree limb... 4-iron
I actually wish I still had my 3-iron for these shots at times, but I only hit it good about 7/10 times... not enough that I trust it... so for now I'll carry a 2 and 3 hybrid, then 4-PW.

In the end you have to decide which club will help you more on a regular basis... are you going to get in trouble on par 3's and other holes not being able to hit a 4-iron as well as needed... or will it cost you more strokes not having any lower lofted irons for the occaisional low punch.

I actually wish I had more irons and no hybrids, so I would keep the 4 iron. Fix the swing, not the club.

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

When you play a par 3 where that 4 iron is the club for the distance, you hate to be standing on the tee with a club that you don't have confidence in.

Like many others, my 4h is my favorite club. last time i played with a friend of mine he commented on how often i use it. it is great in the rough, fairway bunkers, hardpan, anything. Yea, i have found myself under a tree wishing i had a 3 or 4 iron to punch out with but it's not as often as the times i am glad i have it.

If money is not an issue, i would definatly say get it.

I absolutely agree.

Another strong vote for the hybrid. I'd be very surprised if it didn't improve your scoring significantly.

Another vote for the 4 hybrid. It's just so much more versatile than a 4I especially for those that don't hit the ball very far.

All about your swing- more expensive does not mean better. i personally would rather hit a 3 iron then a hybrid. i have found (again, im not an expert. this is MY $.02) that if you have a very descending swing the hybrids arn't great... if you have a sweeping swing the hybrid is a very nice, lovable club.

If you hit your 4 iron, and 3 iron well- id keep it. I hate hybrids but have a hybrid 2 iron that occasionally finds its way into my bag :)

cheers!

Really? I have a descending swing and hit my 18* hybrid fine, as well as my 3 iron and 4 iron... When I sweep my hybrid, I end up hooking it. The hybrid is a really easy club to hit. I find it more difficult to hit a 3 iron consistently than my 18* hybrid. To remedy that, I've spent the past several days at the range just working on my 3 iron. Its paying off. I now have confidence in hitting a 3 iron or my hybrid, when the time calls...

i iron and it's not even close.

Why not just get a set of hybore irons (all hybrids).

I use a 19 deg hybrid and i think it's a fine club but eventually you have to learn how to hit longer irons.

I practiced like crazy this winter indoors on a simulator - my long iron game has been deadly so far.

I love my 4 hybrid and it gets a lot of use, particularly those longer shots that you want to land softly.

A lot of the pros have been covered but from my persepctive I think the 4h is a great club for difficult lies; downhill and sidehill in particular.

Personally, i think determining whether or not to use a hybrid or an iron is determined by you club head speed. If do not generate enough speed hitting longer irons will be difficult. This is why the hybrids are so nice, so of the power comes from the wood like design. The becomes more apparent when hitting out of the rough.

Another thing to look at is your handicap/ability. Longer irons are very difficult to hit and control. If you have contact problems to begin with you probably need to invest in hybrids. From what i have been told the Adams IDEA hybrids are very nice for mid handicap golfers.

Best of luck.
