I am looking for a new ball and wanted to get everyone's input. While I am not 100% sure the ball matters as much as everyone says...I still am intereted in your opinion.

However, I am 100% sure the most popular response will be the ProV1

I play the Top Flite D2 Feel because they are relatively inexpensive($15 for 15 balls). Being a high handicap player I highly doubt playing a ProV1 or something similar would reap enough benefits for my game to justify the extra cost.

I like the feel of the D2's around the greens too.

I play the Callaway HX Hot Bites. I find I get great response around the greens and I don't lose any distance with them. The real seller with these balls is the durability. I find with the tours and Pro V's the cover just get's cut up to easily and they are a little easier on the wallet. I recommend trying a sleeve.

Bridgestone B330 RX. I use it because its a premium ball with plenty of spin with the short irons and wedges, has a soft feel off of the putter, but its designed for an amateur's swing speed, so it doesnt cost you as much distance off of the tee as some of the other premium balls.

It depends what type of round I am playing. If it is a competitive round, I will use a Titleist ProV1 because I get the best performance out of it and I get the most confidence using it. I just shot the lowest score of my season so far using it and will continue using it to achieve the best results. Otherwise during practice or recreational rounds I like using balls like Callaway HX Hot Bite (It gets torn up really bad from my spin milled wedges tho), Bridgestone E6+, Nike Juice, or any other mid grade ball I find on the course. I also use Nike One Platinum, Callaway IX or HX Tour, or anything else I find around to course if possible because of the high spin they give.

I've been using ProV1s pretty exclusively for about 9 months. The main reason is for greater control with the short game. Greens are so fast and hard where I play that you need all the help you can get. I have used a single ball for the last 3 rounds, it's pretty beat up but still performed well. It'll get thrown into the practise pocket now.

I do think that I'll probably not need to use these balls if playing somewhere a little softer around the greens, when I move back to Ireland for example.

The other ball I really like is the TaylorMade TPLP Red, really liked the feel of these off the putter.

I am currently experiementing with ball selection myself. The greens at my home course are painted concrete right now. I was shocked when my lob over a tree hit the green without leaving a mark with a ProV1!

Aside from that I was "scared" of the sideways possibility of using a ProV1 or equivilant. I tried the Bridgestone B330S and Titleist ProV1. I can not say which one I do not like. I get better distance that a 2 piece "distance" and 3 piece control ball. They feel softer and more controllable. While I am practicing my short game I learn more about the balls charactoristics. I like the potential to control these balls over others.

Now if I can just find greens in ideal condition....I may have to switch to the ProV1x or B330RX.....

Top Flight Gamer. I feel that they perform really well since I can't really tell the difference between that and any $40+ per dozen ball. The Gamers perform great for only 20 something a box. Plus I lose way too many to buy expensive balls hahaha.

For the mid to high capper ball selection really doesn't make much of a difference. Certainly even the worst of us can hit a wedge shot and see a difference between a premium ball and the cheapest balls at Walmart, but honestly how often is a high capper going to pull that off? I think that those of us who don't play very well should stick to low cost balls. If you have the money to burn and want to spend it on premium balls ($20 or more a dozen) then by all means do so. But do so with the understanding that you'll be leaving money laying around the course for other people to pick up. I've played rounds with guys who can easily lose 2, 3, 4, or more balls in a round. If your gaming premium balls that can add up.

I've found that I seem to lose the least number of balls when I play a 3 piece, low spin, distance ball. I've spent some time experimenting with 2 piece low spin distance balls (Wilson 50/50, Nike PD Soft, Callaway Big Bertha) and while the specs on those should give me the same performance as a 3 piece low spin ball (e6+, Nike One Vapor, Nike Ignite, Callaway HX Hot, Titlest NXT, Wilson Zip) in practice it hasn't worked out that way. I burn through the cheap(er) 2 piece balls fast whereas the 3 piece balls listed play better for me. It's taken me time to figure this out and I've bought dozens of most of the balls I've listed to do so.

All this being said I always keep a couple of "cheap" found balls in my bag and on those days when I'm really hacking it up I put my "good" balls away and get those out and play them and truth be told I've hit some amazing shots with crappy Top Flights. Go figure?

I'm not a believer in the saying "the ball doesn't matter for a high-handicapper". I know from experience that high handicappers don't get alot of GIR's. I always find myself missing the green by ten, twenty feet. This is where the premium balls comes in. I guarantee you if I was playing a cheap ball, I would be pitching it back and forth on each side of the green. I need a ball that can check and hold when I'm within 50 from the hole. Not a ball that will run out and off the green.

If it wasn't for the premium ball I play, I'd be scoring even higher.

Two years ago I was playing the Top Flight Freak and started to test out the Top Flight Gamer earlier last year. You'll get great distance out of the Freak and a much more controlled reaction (with a bit more spin) out of the Gamer. For $15 for a dozen, it was pretty hard to pass up. I know people are advocates of higher end balls, but those are pretty good balls.

In my opinion, I made a switch to Bridgestone's e+ series in late Spring/early summer of last year. For $24 for 12 balls, you get a really good ball. Right now I mix it up. I mixed up between the e5+ and e6+ almost all of last year and was more keen on the e6+ version as there was more control when I hit. It felt a bit softer so I liked the feel of it. I can't comment on the e7+ yet because I live in Illinois so its not exactly golf season yet, but I do have a dozen of them waiting to be played with.

So with that, if you're very budget concious (and who isnt these days), the Top Flite Gamer balls hold up very well. If you're looking for a better ball but not something that's going to break your bank, I would looking to the e+ series. I think they're well worth it at a modest mid 20 dollar price range...

Pro V1 PRACTICE - Because I feel like the ball is telling me to work harder by yelling at me to "PRACTICE"!!!

Seriously though, for $25 a dozen they aren't too much and even at my skill level I can tell these try harder to hold the green. Feel off the putter is preferable to other balls to me, I like the V1 feel while the others feel very hard.

DT Solo form lost golfballs.com. Grade AAAA, They look new and play great.

I purchased 144 balls in bulk at a price cheap enough that I will not have to go ball hunting and slow everyone down.

White (hopefully cheap) and something that makes a nice sound off the putter face.

I'm still looking at current balls, but back in the day here were my lists.

Play: Pro Staff, Hogan, Top Flite

Avoid: Pinnacle, Maxfli, Titleist (yep, I'd go through those balatas like Freddy Kreuger through a high school, and I hated how they sounded when I was putting), and ANY colored ball
