Should I try to improve my distance at this point?

I've never been a long hitter, and have also struggled with balls going left and right, mostly right. Lately I've managed to straight out the shots very well, but the distance has not changed.

At my handicap, should I care about hitting it long or focus on finding the fairway and green and work on distance control?

My yardages are something like this:

Driver: 225
18.5º 5-wood: 180-200
19º hybrid: 170-180
22º hybrid: 160-170
5i: 160-170
6i: 150-160
7i: 140-150
8i: 130-140
9i: 120-130
PW: 110-120

Sometimes I hit my 18.5º 5 wood almost as far as my driver. I usually play courses at 6500-7000 yards and don't have a problem reaching the greens in two and three.
I will give distance control some work. Mark up distances myself, mark each ball with the club I use and note down the distances. I'm looking for carry distance, it's the only thing that matters for me. I hit my shots high and get very little roll once the ball drops. That goes with any club, from PW to the driver.

Don't mention the short game please, it's something I always work on, but is much easier than the full swing. I'm putting most of my work on the swing now. I'm not looking for great scores, but I want to hit the ball in the direction and at the distance I want. If I three putt it doesn't matter, I'll know that my tee shot and approach was good, putting and short game is fun to work on, I'll deal with those more once I improve my long game. I don't need to lower my hcp or shooting 10 over par.

What do you think or recommend?

i know guys with less distance than you playing into the single digits...
its all about course management... accuracy helps out alot too...
if you get your distance dialed in... i dont think you need to worry except for accuracy

1) The gym- Golf Channel's homepage has videos of Camilo Villegas's workout on it. Check those out because those workouts focus on strengthening the core muscles. They may have taken the videos down already, I have no idea, but they had them up a month or so ago. His workout involves a lot of cable work and a balance ball.

2) Running- Dropping a few pounds never hurt anyone and might improve your swing speed.

3) Revamping your swing- I remember your over-the-top video. That was a while ago so you may have cured that since then. If not, I have to encourage you to really work on bringing that club from the inside on the downswing! It's tough and grueling work that I equate to dentistry, but necessary in forming the right foundation for really fast swing speeds. If you have an over-the-top swing, swinging faster will only worsen the resulting slice!

Weighted clubs kind of scare me so I can't recommend them. They may be good though, who knows.

I agree with flopdarock, your distance is what it is. You can work on some things to improve but chances are you won't go from hitting 225 yard drive to 325 yards. If just working on your game would make that happen, every Tour player would hit those length drives, but they don't.

IMHO, distance control is more important than distance. If you have a 155 yard shot, hitting the ball 155 yards is much more important than what club you used to hit that distance.

I'm not entirely convinced of this. From a flat, good lie in the fairway, sure. But from all sorts of funny lies, I think being able to hit a more lofted club 155 is an advantage. If I had a 155 shot from a funny lie, and decided to go for it, I'd have to use a 4-iron. There are people on this board who would be hitting 7-iron or 8-iron. From a funny lie, a more lofted club seems to be an advantage.

You're not that short of a hitter, but you're playing from some pretty long tees for your overall ability.

I'd recommend moving up one set of tees and working on your ball striking, short game, and course management.

seems like you wouldn't post this were you not thinking you'd like to improve your distance, or at least you're thinking all things considered, you should be getting more distance.

Seems to me if you're hitting straight, then if you wanna work on your long game, distance, trajectory, and shaping are the remaining big things to work on.

I'd suggest a lesson or two to see if a pro might have some suggestions for you one way or the other. Who knows, a minor tweaking of setup or swing might get you into a better position and suddenly you've found 15-20yds.

My point was, it doesn't matter what club you hit 155 yards as long as you can hit it 155 yards.

Story goes Ben Hogan was playing a practice round with a young pro, after Mr. Hogan hit his approach to within feet of the pin, the young pro asked what club he hit. Hogan said it didn't matter what club he hit but that he hit the ball the distance he had intended.

At that point he dropped a bag of balls on the ground and proceed to hit every club in his bag to the same spot on the green.

Your distances don't seem too bad. They are not tour distance obviously, but good enough to shoot low. I agree with the exercise portion if you actually decide that you want to work on the distance.

My advice would be to get your distance control and accuracy down with what you have now. Once you start hitting solid, consistent, accurate contact..then I would worry about getting more distance if that is what you want. You may find that working on the above and getting your contact more solid will net you the distance gains that you are looking for anyway.

    • Typically less than 50. I find this can be affected by the "CART" signs on a given course. I don't like taking my rangefinder out of the cart and carrying it around to the green. I am very fearful I will leave it somewhere.
    • First ever holed out greenside bunker shot! It's crazy it took this long to finally get one during a round, but the cold streak is officially over. Hole 6 on the Palmer Course at PGAN. I hit my driver like 225 into a really stiff wind, then worm burned a hybrid into the bunker. I was about I dunno, 40-45 feet away. Birdie! Let's go! The red Xs the approximate location of each shot.  Really fun!!
    • Day 23: Rained all day, so no ball hitting. Worked indoors on top of the backswing feel, and also putted around the living room working on bead.
    • Played Four Oaks in Dracut today going back to the 2 man scramble match play format. My brother and I shot a team 81 winning 3 and 2. Had so many good shots today using a more centered turn. Seems to have really iginited my golf game. We'll see if I can keep it going.
