What's the big deal about Michelle Wie?

Every time there's a LPGA event on Golf Channel, they make a big deal about Michelle Wie, whether she's shooting decently or not.

Now, I know she's good as compared to the rest of the population, and as you can see from my handicap, she'd wipe the floor with me out on the course.

But she's playing in a professional tour, and not doing remarkably well. I've become quite accustomed to seeing that Wie is over par during the times this year that I've caught the LPGA on TV.

What's the big deal with her? She's not usually on the front page of the leaderboard, so why do they bother to make such a fuss over her?

And is it just me, or does Paula Creamer constantly look like she's on the edge of tears?

Re: What's the big deal about Michelle Wie?

Because she was supposed to be the female Tiger Woods... and I suppose the media doesn't want to admit that they were wrong.

Maybe it's her killer legs.....

I don't know...I'll watch her for a few holes when I'm in the mood for watching golf.

Re: What's the big deal about Michelle Wie?

She was quickly pegged as the savior of the LPGA when she was an amateur.

She hasn't quite panned out the way the golf analysts and media thought, but the promotion made her the most well-known name in female golfer on earth. People watch and want to know how she's doing because they're familiar with her, whether she's winning or not.

Hell, I've known all about her for years, and I've never paid attention to or played golf before this year.

Yeah, because despite playing about half the events of most of the LPGA players, being 16th on the money list is "not doing remarkably well"?

I kind of agree here. I was discussing a similar situation on the PGA.
It seems to me that Tiger Woods is ALWAYS the feature story about golf.
Angel Cabrera wins the masters and the news is where Tiger finished and why
he didn't win. Perhaps it is geared more to the non-golf fan, and Tiger [Eldrick] is the only golfer they know.

That is part of the explanation. I still have to believe that "money talks". When Nike and other companies shell out bushels of cash to a golfer like Michelle and they advertise on The Golf Channel, do you not think that influences the coverage of the "star"? If The Golf Channel did not boost her, Nike would probably cut their advertising in half. If that should happen, there would be even more informercials on TGC. Wouldn't that be loverly?

True as that may be, in all of the tournaments I've seen of the LPGA this year, she's not yet been in the top ten. Now, I haven't seen every tournament, and I understand that it would be asinine to equate this to poor performance without having seen every one. But it's not like I saw two tournaments and am calling it there. (I'd say I've seen seven-ish this year, I haven't exactly kept count in the case that I was going to hop onto a golf forum and ask.)

For someone to be getting all that coverage, I'd think they'd consistently be atop the leaderboards, or dang close.

Thanks for explaining it to me, everyone. I wasn't sure what was going on with her.

Uhm, except that other companies shell out cash too, and probably more than Nike. Dumb way to look at the world.

Golf Channel and other TV stations show Michelle Wie because she's American, good to look at, and is having a reasonable amount of success. Plus, even non-golfers know her name. That's really about it.

It didn't hurt that her playing partner was mic'd up the first two days, either.

PGA Tour viewership was off 40% when Tiger was gone. The media is just telling us (collectively) what we want to know. At times it has annoyed me that he is reported on so much but that is just life and it's all about the Benjamins. If we owned a TV station or network, we'd do the same thing.

I agree and I'm tired of hearing that she has yet to win a major.

Win a major? She hasn`t even won a tournament, unless I`m sadly mistaken.I really can`t stand her, although I have nothing against her. It just peeved me that she tried to compete against the men when she can`t even beat the Koreans on the LPGA. I guess it`s all about ratings, ect, but I`ll never be a fan.

Wow that's a little harsh. I agree that she hasn't lived up to her winning potential yet and I'm not sure that she was handled well early on (strictly from her games standpoint.) But if anyone thinks that she won't win a major or a tournament in her career they are delusional.

Re: What's the big deal about Michelle Wie?

Wie showed a lot of promise as an amateur and was built up by the media to be the female Tiger woods.
She kinda of lost her way for a while and is just now starting to come back.
I think the LPGA really wants her to be the star and thats why you see them focus on her.

Re: What's the big deal about Michelle Wie?

She seems like a female version of AK. Just a personal opnion from what I have seen of both. Both American born Koreans who had their mishaps but AK has had a bit more success. Hopefully she starts sinking more putts like on THursday. I definitely like watching her swing.

Re: What's the big deal about Michelle Wie?

Im realatively sure it's because she was 13 at the time .... not bc she's american.

I feel a lot of the frustration and "hate" towards Wie is misdirected. It's not her fault she has the physical tools to beat the pants off most of the male viewing public.

She has the length and ability to "technically" be able to compete with men. The problem is her execution and mental fortitude just hasn't come around yet.

She's not a 12 handicap Lady with a 190yard drive. She can hit the ball far enough.
