I just got done playing here in NJ. Survived the rain, but was really annoyed with the guy they paired with my threesome after nine holes. His game was okay, but he kept giving unsolicited advice to everyone. One of my guys left after 5 because I could see he was getting peeved with this guy.

So, we get to the last hole and my one remaining buddy has a 5 footer for par and I have a 3 footer for par on the same line, a somewhat extreme side hill, down hill putt. So, my buddy putts and his ball turns in torwards the hole, but does a 180 out the other side. So, I say to him, "just too fast, but it does break a good deal, right? And he responded with an resounding "yes". Just then stranger chimes in "Oh I wouldn't play break, that putt's too short". Keep in mind I usually go around the course in 32 putts or less and out-putted this guy for the entire 9 he was with us.

Now confused, I didn't play break, it broke and I missed the putt. The jerk then has the nerve to say "oh you just didn't hit it right." He then tells me too try the same thing again but "put a good stroke on it this time." The result was the same. I bite my tongue, say good-bye, but was steaming all the way to the parking lot. Anybody who wants to empathize, relate a similar experience or just blow off some steam, please feel to contribute.

I think you made a few mistakes here...

#1: You need ONE MORE friend.
#2: Give yourself the penalty for asking advice ;)
#3: You're playing in New Jersey.

It sounds like you only have yourself to blame in two ways:

1) Why would you let him continue to give advice? You didn't say you asked him to stop, and it's probably safe to assume you didn't. This topic's been covered several times here.

2) Why did you listen to him, ever, or let him get in your head?

If you can't do #1, you've really gotta do #2.

It sounds like you only have yourself to blame in two ways:

I hear what you're saying. But, I did ignore his advice, and paid it no mind whatsoever until that last putt. And I just let it confuse me, rather than annoy me. It was only when he threw that second ball down and said "now put a good stroke on it" that I got ticked. But by then, the round was over and all it spoiled was my walk to the parkking lot.

you should have just given him the polite.....I'm not looking to join the Tour next weekend Hoss, I'm just out having some fun......but thanks anyways....unless he's a complete idiot (which you can run into from time 2 time) he would have gotten the message

It's really not about the unsolicited advice. Like I said, I ignored him the entire round. I was just ranting about how far he took it on the last hole.

Anyone would have been contrite after obviously throwing me off. But, he couldn't accept he might have been wrong, so instead he insisted I just hit a bad putt and basically intimated that again after he threw down the 2nd ball and I missed again aiming straight like he wanted. I guess the guy was just an ego-centric jerk. I was just doing a primal scream with this thread and blowing off some steam, not asking for advice on how to handle people like that.

I feel for you. I played a similar round getting paired with a guy who couldn't resist giving "lessons" to everyone, from swing critiques to anything else golf.

By the fifth hole I basically told him to stop; that I have my own swing thoughts and don't need his. I was really, annoyed. But he at least cut it out with me, but my other two partners - who aren't that good, still got the "playing lessons".

You know, I've never had anyone try to give me advice, at least since I was a kid.

But I've been playing since I was 7.

Then I took my nephew out earlier this week and some guy kept trying to give him advice and he would look over at me each time like "yes, ok, good advice?"

the advice wasn't horrible, but i've been working with him on a few things and these little tips were just confusing him.

Meh.

Keep your advice to yourself, unless it's solicited. heh.. But you all know that... it's just the other shmucks out there.

BTW, this guy couldn't have been better than an 18-20 handicap. I've been coaching and teaching golf for 12 years. heh

I'd rather have someone blow an airhorn in my backswing than get unwanted advice. It is my one and only pet peeve (unless it's casual and from a friend, then I'll at least listen). Try this next time: One time a guy joined up with 3 of us on the third, and proceeded to Pummel us with advice. I outscored him and out-drove him all day long. When the 18th was holed, I shook his hand, looked him in the eye, and told him that he owed our group .68 cents. He kinda smiled and asked why. I told him for everytime he threw his two cents in. He looked at his feet and felt stupid. It helped a little....

Yesterday morning I joined a twosome and then got paired up with another single player.

VERY nice guys, but the single with me was having some issues I've had in the past. I recognized it right away. Short story is that he had a closed stance to prevent a slice due to a limited turn, but wasn't having that issue that day.

We played 9 holes with the twosome, then another 4 holes on our own, at which point he looked right at me after his 9th Pull-hook and said "WHAT am I doing wrong". He asked twice. He really wanted an answer.

I am NOT a pro and I was reluctant to do so, but I told him what I saw and for remaining holes he was more right & middle than left.

After the round, he thanked me and asked why I waited so long to tell him.

I said "You never asked."

He completely understood.

    • Day 5- Slow,  short swings with short practice club.
    • Lemme guess….’ We don’t want any confrontation so nobody says anything.’ Sheesh…..Call him out and fix the problem.
    • Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.
    • Yeah, this isn't sandbagging. It's outright cheating. He should be banned.
    • That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.
