if you only got one wedge i would buy the 56* its easier to handle and if you need extra loft open the face.

Agreed, if you're going to only get one wedge, get the 56, but if you're getting 2, grab a 60 or a 52, as well, depending if you really need the 60.

Agreed. From 40 yards and in, pretty much the only thing I use.

gasfreak,

I sugest zeroing in on the loft and bounce you want and then buy two Vokeys of that same exact configuration.

Game one and lube one up and save it for breaking out as "new" in two years when you've 'worn' the first one out. You'll be loving the nice grooves for a long time.

By the way....I just got in a PING Tour-W wedge....haven't gamed it yet....but the fit, finish and overall appearance of the thing is spectacular. So many ways to order them as far as bounce, grind, etc. I can't wait to game it and see how it performs for me.

If you are only getting 1 for sure I would go with the 56* I would recommend getting another once your game improves or whatever the criteria is that you are only considering getting 1 at this time. I started with a 54 when I got my first because my PW is 45 and then got a 50 for my next and my final will be a 58 when I get the money for it.

If your PW is 48 and you've got no SW, I'd get a 54º or 56º.

If your PW is 48 and you've got a SW at 56º and need a gap-filler, I'd get a 52º

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I have two Vokey wedges. 54* and 58*

They're the older version though - 2002 (I think!)

I would definitely recommend Titliest Vokey wedges whatever the loft.

I have a 58 degree Volkey rusty and it works fine for me around the greens.
If i need 56 degree I use the Sand wedge.
Ihave a 60 degree Volkey however I never use it in compition cause I am not good enough with it to trust myself/myswing.

Since my nine iron is an old fashioned (weak lofted) 46°, I go with a 51-6 pitching wedge, a 56-8 gap wedge, a 61-4 lob wedge, and a dedicated sand iron that I don't play from the turf except in deep rough.

However, I suck with the 61-4 and should go with a 52-6 and a 58-6 instead of the set of three (excluding the sand club) that I have now. That would get me down to thirteen clubs and I can't think of anything I'd want to add.
Perhaps twin drivers with open and closed faces.

My present setup is described in detail on my thread about it being hard to find good clubs for seniors with a little game.

    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
